Hi all,

After owning my MY 2015 Autobiography for 16 months now, I am spitting feathers with the Satnav.
On many long journeys, the ETA varies wildly even when there are no traffic issues.

A very real example:
In one hour from now, I am travelling from Warwick to Sudbury in Suffolk (please don't burgle me!).
Google Maps (with live traffic) tells me it will take 2 hours 10 minutes.
My Full Fat tells me it will take 3 hours 16 minutes using the same route.
Which should I believe?

I love my FFRR but the Satnav drives me crazy.
My previous car (2011 BMW 535d) had a reliable Satnav which only changed ETA when there were real traffic incidents/problems.

Am I the only one "suffering in silence" over this antiquated, inefficient so called driver aid?

the ETA is worked out on that particular time of travel so if 100yards down the road theres an un-expected hold up then the ETA will be superfluous...

I think the problem is that it tends to extrapolate from the speed you have recently been driving at. Whereas SatNavs like Tom Tom have an algorithm based on typical speeds for each type of road involved in the journey. This latter approach seems to give a better estimate of journey time.

On board navigation is never going to be as good as Google Maps or Waze. The online things are internet connected which means the crowd supply updates and the source also uses many more pieces of information than a car system which isn't getting feeds from anything except TMC, which is also about as much use as tits on a bull.

Genuinely I am starting to think that on board DVD or HD based navigation has really had its day. Not sure how long before we just get the ability to install our own apps to the car but that is definitely the way it will go. Android head units can already offer this but only to the aftermarket. That said, I think we are close to being able to "project" smartphone apps to the car wirelessly which would serve the same purpose.

Wot mzplcg says. I use Waze in any of the cars I drive as it is live and gives an ETA nearly always correct to the minute. It also comes up with alternative routes if it senses a serious delay up ahead on your chosen route.My iPad mini/IPhone also fits nicely in front of my in-car Screen.

I think the maps and data algorithms don't always work the way they should. To give an example, in March this year I drove from a cottage we rented in Airton (Yorkshire Dales) to Grassington. Took us there no problem around 8 or 9 miles, through lots of narrow lanes but that's what you get in that neck of the Woods. However, coming back it wanted us to take us on a sixty mile return trip and didn't offer an alternative. Ignored it and found my way back after a bit of faffing around but it was frustrating. Anyway, came back to the same village in September and again decided on a trip to Grassington but this time in an updated L405 and it got us there no problem. However, yet again it tried to take us sixty mile back to where we'd just drove nine miles from. LR needs to sort it retrospectively because the system isn't good.

I want to believe mine is good but it just does stupid things, for eg I am travelling on a dual carriageway and it wants me to come off and go through a town and rejoin the same carriageway, if I stay on the carriageway it will take less than a minute but going through the town will add 10 minutes, it done this at almost every junction in fact the children said it's scared of fast roads
It just doesn't sit right with me to buy a good Tom Tom when I have just spent £100k on a Range Rover  2010 defender utility

On my 3rd Range Rover. The only issue I have is the awful Sat Nav.
I tow a large caravan (8.5 metres) and 2.6 tonnes... Why isn't there a setting for towing??? surely the best tow car in the world should have this.
I use MICHELIN APP on my phone as there is a Trailer setting and never sends me down small lanes like the one on the car does... In fact, some routes have even included roads that the Range Rover won't get down..
Never travel without a map

I have a £100k+ car and a £250 TomTom satnav unit on the dash. THAT is how crap the LR product is.

heads up for waze used it today all around the city and back home via a restaurant well impressed love that yo can change the voices !!

I really hope the bods at JLR read these posts and wake up and smell the coffee.
£100K car and all we see is owners having to resort to TomTom, Waze etc.
The Germans have their satnavs sorted...generally almost as good as TomTom, Waze, Garmin et al with decent live traffic updates.
C'mon JLR, get your act together. If it ain't broken, fix it till it is.

Tom Tom isn't much better these days, I've got a sony headunit in my 911 with tomtom built in to it, paid for all the subscriptions etc and the FREE Waze app is still better. Current
