Didn't know they had them (mines late 2013). I accidentally opened the tail gate when I was backed up to a hedge (pressed wrong button on remote in the dark) and it kept opening the upper tailgate until the hedge stopped it (lower one was ok due to its length). Luckily, no scratches on the paintwork Steve

I think it is more likely to be an over-current detection in the motor. If it hits an obstruction then the increased motor current is the trigger. So it may be dirty struts or sticky hinges.

The sales man showed me on delivery if he pushed the rubber seal on the sides it stopped the tail gate so they must be in there and not be proximity sensors but pressure sensors.

I had a look at the manual.

Hi , well I had my rear tail gate hit the garage door because I touched the dash button while cleaning and the tail gate did not detect the garage door it hit it so I think there is some kind of load sensor for if the door is stopped by something but it will still hit it.
