Very high mileage 'nearly new' - pros & cons

Hypothetical post:

Are very high mileage diesel cars to be avoided, even if the 'price is right' and reflects the mileage.

I'm thinking Near enough 40k miles on an 18 month old car that has been owned by the franchised 'group'.

Apart from brakes and tyres, with mileage like that, they can't have been doing too much stop start in town traffic? and must have near as damn it been on the road lots (been 'to the moon and back'), so surely not too many worn parts? ...aside to maybe aesthetics/ seats/ interior potentially showing signs of wear...

And with the balance of the manufacturers warranty... What could go wrong!

Thumbs Up

That would have to be motorway miles Ryan, so I would suggest minimal wear and tear, even on the seats. Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I would say that as long as you expect to do lower than average miles, it would be a great buy.

That way, by the time you come to sell, it's more like an average mile car Thumbs Up

If you expect to load up the miles even further, then I'd say not

40k miles or 75k km is nothing to be concerned about particularly if greater than average use, if it's been serviced as required according to miles. ______________________________

Very little wear on that I would reckon Ryan, brakes and tyres excepted. As said if you are doing low miles it's a smart way to buy. 40k on an 18 month old car, 2200 miles a month, if you only do 6000 miles per year it will even out when the car is 6 years old with about 65k on it, then you will have an average mileage car it does depend on how long you want to keep it. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

40,000 miles is only just run in... long enough for all the niggles to have been sorted but new enough to still 'feel' new.

Mine is 10 years old and has 115k miles on it...still doesn't appear all that far removed from 'new'. Just depends how the car has been treated really!

New + Hugh mileage Thumbs Up

I got mine at 4 years old and 105000 miles. I don't put a lot of miles on and now the odometer is quite reasonable for its age.

My dad had good luck buying vehicles from my uncle at one-year old and 60000 miles. All I remember were oil changes and new tyres.

I do c40k miles pa in mine, its on 33k after 18 months BUT it is on its second engine Whistle I picked it up 11 months old with 14k miles, the engine went on <20k miles.

To do that sort of mileage its not necessarily all motorway. I'm based on Liverpool and do glasgow and gatwick every week plus plenty of other runs which are motorway but the car gets used as much for short runs as SWMBO family hack which does c6k pa.

So for me a 40k miler gets the same use as a 20-30k reps car and a family hack.

I agree though if you do low mileage they can be a great buy if your keeping for 5 years or so.

Likewise this is the route I went - bought approved used at 2 years old and 70k miles - now it's 6 years and 105k, so first owner took crazy depreciation!!

Thinking about this, it only really matters if you are into changing your car regularly and then depreciation kicks in. If you buy planning to keep the thing for a good ten years then if you do high mileage or low its condition will be down to how well you look after it and its value will reach the point where it is no longer monetary but worth more to you than anybody else.☺
