When cruising on the motorway an intermittent noise in the cab comes from under the gear shifter that sounds like driving on the white rumple line on the motorway.

Is anyone familiar with the noise? Problem? Solution?

Not that intense, you know that white line at the edge of the central reservation on the motorway or dual carriageway when you dose off slightly and it wakes you up when you drift over it- a softer version of that

Is it worse when accelerating slowly up a slight incline , does it stop at around 60 mph and does the Rev counter move slightly when it vibrates ?

Yes to the slight incline, not sure on the other bits but it will happen at slower speeds- I would tak it for a test drive but it failed it's mot yesterday so totting up jobs for the weekend.

Have you had a similar experience?

typical torque converter failure is vibration up until around 55 to 60 mph when holding a steady light accelerating throttle up a slight incline.

When it fails what does it need doing to it?

Normally if it is just the noise and nothing else then phil keeps the refurbished items on the shelf and it's a case of transmission off, swap over TC, transmission on which sounds simple and it is if the transmission didn't weigh so much.
When i did mine I also rebuilt the transmission and phil also keeps those on the shelf but if there is no other symptoms then it's just a case of swapping the TC.

How long did it take? Do you need the jig tool?

You don't need any special tools, tranny out and in is a good days job with a ramp, on the floor I'd allow a weekend for it... Book time is 5 hours...

You will not lift it on your own unless you are Mr universe so you need to phone a friend... or two...  Pete

And get a transmission jack, and we made full length ramps but as a decent garage can do it in a few hours then i would ask an indy but get your TC from Phil so you know it has been properly refurbished as it is a specialist job.
Couple of fots below of it leaving the mothership and the ramps we made and yes we did brace between the supports to stop them folding up on us.
The transmission complete looks like it should be orbiting the earth not being maternally extracted from under a RR.

Much easier if you take the transfer box off the back first, doesn't spill any oil or need any gaskets, does make it that bit easier though....  Pete

I have since removed and refitted the transfer box separately and that does weigh a lot on it's own and again took me a day to try and get it back in on my own without a lift just a trolley jack and ended up getting a neighbour to help, damn that gravity...
regarding transmission cost, i did a complete strip down after reading everything i could find that RRPhil had ever posted, measured all the clutch packs, replaced the suspect seals that can go as i also had an oil leak at the rear of the transmission and a few bearings, oil, filter etc etc and etc.
i think the service kit and other spares and the TC rebuild was around £600, oil is another £120 i think and must be the mobil LT71141 and the ramps and other stuff and i paid my mate around £500 as he is a top bloke and wasn't working and i would not of attempted it without him and RRPhil was a massive help and without his direct and indirect input i would not have even started the job.
if it is just the vibration and the transmission is fine without any leaks then you could just swap the TC as you don't need to touch the transmission internals

you need to clarify that your noise is the TC as you dont want to be taking the box out without good reason

Coolio thank you- love the ramps- I've been eyeing up two post lifts on gumtree- some 3 tonne ones start at around £400.... but the directors may have something to say about that going up outside the flat

I think what I'll do is get the MOT bits sorted out so it passes and take it for a drive & film the noise then post a video on YouTube so I can get a good diagnosis
