Washed the car today and when I poked the sponge through the off-side rear wheel spokes I could hear a metallic tapping noise. On inspection I could see that the large C shaped retaining clip for the brake pad was hanging off - it wouldn't have taken much for it to fall off completely and who knows what it could have damaged. Looking at the clip it seemed ok so I fitted it back and it seems tight enough, is this one of these 'Known Fault' things and can I expect to have to add checking these to my regular routine? QUID FACIUM TIBI

Most likely not fitted correctly the last time the pads were changed

That was my thought - I was told that the dealer had replaced the pads when I bought the ff and that was six months ago. I am pretty sure the clip hadn't been loose before and I wondered if they were prone to easily coming off by them selves.... QUID FACIUM TIBI

If it is the clip shown in the image my rear one dropped once when I reversed my car off my drive, it was old and rusty and so was the caliper where it fits so I replaced it with a new one when I changed my pads and discs and cleaned up the caliper

Hi - just got back after a week away. Yes that is the clip, mine looked pretty good and there was nothing to indicate what made it come off. I shall keep an eye on it until I can get two new ones... QUID FACIUM TIBI

I don't think they do much apart from stopping the pads from squeaking, i dont think they actually hold the pads in

Thats good to know - I have a mate who once applied his brakes riding down a steep hill and the pads disintegrated and shot out of the front wheel. Luckily it was a pushbike and he had the rear brakes, but it still gave him a fright. Wouldnt like to think of that happening in an FF - might end in tears.... QUID FACIUM TIBI

If i had the choice of being in the fatty or on the bike with the fatty coming towards without brakes i know which i would choose
