Slight wine coming from gearbox

Hi. There is a slight wining noise coming from our l322 zf gearbox. What could this be?
Also our engine, the 4.4 litre petrol make a slight ticking noise when idle but our friends doesn't. Am sure I have read something about this being normal?

Haha I will be sure to do that! I meant whine. It seams to do it when changing from 1st to 2nd and very slightly from 2nd to 3rd. Not heard it on the gears above that but then the vehicle is travelling faster and there's more noise to hide it if it is doing it. Seams to get better as car warms up.

Certainly worth checking the fluid level in case it's a bit low and the pump is cavitating slightly when cold

Cheers. I did that over the weekend. Noise got better slightly but still there. One thing that must be said is that I changed the trans temp sensor a few months ago as it was faulty. Obviously that meant draining the transmission oil. What came out was cherry red. The stuff I was recommended to put in was honey coloured mobil 71141 I think. Now am wondering if this could be part of the problem?
