Help about Coding

Question is Gents .

18 year old daughter has just started Uni , her subject is Mobile and Website development , she has asked her lecturers whats the best place to get books and info from , also can she do coding on a macbook or a windows laptop ( which is better ) but so far none of her teachers have got back to her or advised her , i was just wondering if any of you guys on here would have any information you could pass on ....

TIA .... Thumbs Up ====================================

Id start with books like HTML5 for dummies, building a website for Dummies....

Either machine should do the job, most prefer windows machines but then i know coders who love their apples...

Without knowing more about the course structure i cant reccomend anything further like back end structure or such.

Martin may be able to help as well Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Technically all of it can be done in basic notepad, I did basic java and HTML in it backnin college but then you'd want to runnit theoigh something to check.

The dummies books and some time on YouTube are your best bet to getting started ahead of the pack if she hasn't done them before she'll want to get upto speed quickly as it will make her life a lot easier!

Long term I'd advise her to get very good at Java and then even if she doesn't like it you can earn decent money from it as a contractor Wink FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Windows machines seem to be easier to upgrade the hardware if she finds her laptop of choice can't do what's needed. Apple likes stuff that just comes out of the box and just works. Apple isn't for those who want to fiddle with stuff.

I'm a full stack web contract developer by trade with 15 years experience.

She should get a MacBook for coding, if she can afford one, they cost more than a similar Windows machine. If she needs Windows she can run a Virtual machine with parallels. Modern web devs tend to use Macs. Mac OS is Unix based so very powerful and configurable.

Don't bother with books at all, they are costly and get out of date very quickly . Use online resources to learn, mostly free, some are paid for. I haven't purchased a book for years.

Languages - that would be governed by her course I would have thought. Universities love Java and it's well used in industry - bit old school these days though. JavaScript is getting more and more popular.

My advice is have a decent machine with 2 big screens and after that use free open source dev software and online courses to learn.

If she needs any advice let me know.

I am beginning to think she is in the masons coz she tells me naff all what she's doing .... ====================================

Working in similar areas unless its ASP.NET development I wouldn't touch a Windows PC for web development unless you were going to stick Linux on it.

Most of the new kids on the block work best on Linux and / or Mac rather than Windows. Windows isn't bad just a bit clunky in my opinion. Ed
