John it's so bad that my parents are travelling into Stirling on the free Tescos bus, they cannot get either of their cars out of their yard because the snow plough has blocked everybody in with 3ft high walls of snow across the driveways! We get snow when nobody else does out our way - we get snowed in but 5 miles away in the next village they don't get a single flake! It it stays below freezing much longer the curlers will be looking for another Bonspiel on the Lake of Menteith again this winter. In February this year when we had the big snow dump I took the RRSport up to try the Amulree to Kenmore Road............ Great fun with 2feet of snow on it but I never got more than 5 miles passed Amulree, even with winter Tyres on and the snow setting on the Terrain Response I had problems on the low level section of the route. At long last some real snow since we moved here. Only got a light dusting earlier in the year.

I had a similar experience, was out on Sunday night with a few mates along some back roads, went down an icy 20% gradient hill, ABS cut in so I couldn't stop, my mate was in front in his V8 Dolomite, luckily we had walkie talkies so was able to warn him I couldn't stop. Thankfully the road went straight on at the bottom of the hill, I was expecting a dry stone wall or something. The hill just appeared out of nowhere, totally didn't expect it.

Should you find yourself in a situation where you need to stop quickly on ice where the ABS is preventing you from slowing - I have found that by selecting Neutral helps. Then you're only fighting inertia - not the gearbox trying to keep your wheels turning.

This is only recommended in a SLOW slide situation under 5mph etc. You should be able to knock the speed off significantly by knocking it into sport mode and quickly selecting first gear.

Try the above next time you're on a slight slope and in a safe area.

Also on snow/ice if you are going slow and find yourself needing to turn, but are unable to get the front wheels to grip - apply the brakes and increase the angle of the turn. This will cause Corner Braking Control to kick in which will grab at the side of the car in the direction you want to turn in forcing a turn.

All the above comes with practice and was learnt from playing in car parks/ sliding down hills etc.

Whatever you do, don't turn off DSC when descending hills. I forgot to turn it back on after turning it off to climb a hill. Resulted in 2 360's and sliding (luckily gently) into a snowdrift.
