Major coolant leak

Just accelerating up a slip road today pulling the trailer with a car on it and clouds of steam start pouring out from under the bonnet.
AA recon the water pump has failed, steam and coolant every where when I got stopped in a layby 1 mile later. Looks like I have to strip down the front end now to find the leak.

If it is the water pump (could be a hose) engine doesn't hold water now, water just runs back out from between the engine and the radiator.

Any tips on doing the water pump before I get started tomorrow? 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

If you buy a new water pump make sure it's a Hella. Don't for gawd's sake buy a. First line. They are sh*te! I had 2 go in 3 yrs and the hella is still going strong 3 yrs later.

EDIT, just realised you have a TDV8 so I haven't got a clue if any of this is relevant, sorry

Fan nut is left hand and you will most likely need a holding tool while you undo the nut although some have got away with a hammer I didn't so had to make a tool.
If you are removing the water pump , I know this applies to the 4.4 m62, there are two pipes that run to a coolant manifold at the back of the engine that can just pull out with the pump which you don't want to do so care is needed when removing the pump.
Definite on the Hella as mentioned.
Buy a spare gasket.
If it's the 4.4 v8 there is a pain in the ass bolt to remove which is easier with a 10 mm ratchet I think it was although I removed the belt tensioner from memory to give me more room
Think that's right, it was a while ago.
Bleeding the system on the 4.4 can take bleeding ages so keep it topped up with heaters on and be patient
A coolant refill is about 13 litres but holds around 18 litres if you don't drain the block so I used concentrate rather than ready mix
This is all applied to 4.4 not sure about diesel so some or all of this could be ballax

thanks for the advice guys.

Looks like the AA were wrong, top radiator hose had blown off the block just above the water pump, so doesn't look like water pump has gone.

bad news was when I put the pipe back on and ran it up to temperature the pipe blew off again. Think it was cause the clip may not have been on very well as it is a pig to get at unless you remove the inlet manifold.

Ordered a new pipe in case the original has gone soft or stretched a bit.

Anyone got any tips for getting the clip on to this pipe? 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Sorry, mine are just the clip on type so you just push them on and there is a silver spring clip that locks in place which doesnt look like it should work but it does

I have the spring type clips as well, just really difficult to get the clip on as the access id really poor. I think I either didn't have the pipe on far enough or put the clip off the back.

Ordered new pipe and clip so will fit them when they arrive and hopefully will have her back running again.

Going to really take my time though, check, check and check again 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

I put the clip about 4" down the pipe then pushed the pipe on as far as it would go, then slid the clip down the pipe so it was about 1/2" from the end of the pipe.

Had a read of the repair manual tonight and it looks like the RH throttle housing comes off easily. Think I will remove as it will give me better access to fit the clip to the pipe and I will be able to see if the pipe is all the way on 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Yep, 3.6 TDV8, has the more traditional connectors rather than the quick fit type in your picture 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

For anyone who has a similar problem in the future.

When the new pipe arrived, it came with the spring type hose clip glued on to the pipe and has a clip on the clamp to hold it open. This means you can slide the hose on to the pipe and when it is in place release the clamp to hold the hose in place.

Land rover have obviously realised that with all the lack of access in this area you can't get a set of pliers on the the clamp to hold it open 56 TDV8 Vogue SE
