BMW Diagnostic Software for a Range Rover??

Hi All,

I have a problem with my instrument pack, the problem is that it is beyond repair its something to do with circuit board tracks.

So I had two options,

1. Buy a new instrument pack.

2. Buy a used instrument pack.

I went the cheaper route (no surprises there) but if I just fit it I'll end up with the tamper dot and goodness knows what other problems I'll encounter. So I've been researching software that will read the old instrument pack and save the data, then erase whatever data is on the replacement instrument pack and write the data from the old instrument pack to the replacement and bobs your uncle, no tamper dot and the mileage and VIN are all correct.

The problem (or not ) is that it's software for BMWs. Maybe not such a problem seeing that my Range Rover L322 is mostly made up of BMW modules and ecu's.

I have an IIDtool but it can't do this, although to their immense credit the guys from GAP are going to have a go but they are a bit short handed and time is of the essence.

My question for the forum is has anyone tried the following software successfully on an L322,

SSS Progman

PA Soft 1.36 / 1.40

I've seen a demo of someone doing exactly what I need to do but on a BMW instrument cluster and it piqued my interest.

So please anyone out there with experience of this on an L322, any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Many regards ______________________________

I will. In my searches I've found quite a few of us owners of older l322s finding problems with their instrument packs with some of them unrepairable.

I know that these cars when new were £50k+ and that just because they are a few years old doesn't mean the prices of spares are going to drop, but that doesn't stop us from looking for a workaround.

It was quite interesting to watch the footage of the instrument pack being "replicated over, even though they mention eeprom soldering apparently it's not essential.

Hi,

Well I went ahead and bought PA Soft 1.40 and it works brilliantly.

I installed my replacement instrument cluster and the dreaded tamper dot was there, so I looked at the menu in PA Soft and found the section for the instrument cluster, one of the options was to write a VIN to the replacement cluster.

I'd noted the VIN from the Range Rover and entered the last seven characters as requested and the tamper dot disappeared..... Thumbs Up

The mileage on the replacement cluster was lower than mine so when I put the ignition on it showed the lower mileage. I read into this extensively and apparently the other modules that hold the mileage information only check with the cluster every 50 - 100 miles or so, depending on where you do your research I've even seen up 200 miles before a check is made. I'll obviously find out when I start to take the Range Rover out, and I'll report back.

When the check is made the mileage on the cluster should change to the mileage held in the other modules (LCM etc) but only if the mileage on the replacement cluster is lower than your original, if it's higher on the replacement then all of the modules holding mileage data will be updated to the higher mileage. Obviously not ideal so it's best to look for a lower mileage cluster. I've documented everything I've done with photos and kept the original cluster so I can show it to any prospective buyers in case they think I've tried to clock it, which was not the intention, my cluster was knackered.

As I've said the lower mileage should increment to the original mileage after a few trips, if not I'll keep all records especially the difference in mileage which is about 15000 miles.

You CANNOT change the mileage on the cluster not without taking an eeprom from the circuit board and rewriting it, like I said not ideal and quite a tricky and intricate task and not one that my 50 year old hands could manage...

The software itself is quite good insofar as it will interrogate all of the BMW based modules and read and reset faults, you can also change options and individualise your Range Rover, not as good or as easy to use as the brilliant IIDtool but you CAN remove the tamper dot from your cluster if that's what you need.

All in all a good result and the tamper dot was removed for the princely sum of £20 delivered...

I'll report back on the mileage in due course - fingers crossed.

I'll hook it up in the morning and make a note of which modules.

I'll try and take some screen shots and upload them if possible. It's very comprehensive but dependent on having a laptop with you as opposed to the IIDtool which can just sit in the glovebox.

That will be totally cool and currently the only diag tool I have is an old ass OBD II reader which needs a laptop to run, so this will be an upgrade! lol

From memory you'll be amazed at the amount of modules this thing will interrogate and customise.

Have a search on google for PA Soft 1.40 and BMW and enjoy..... ______________________________

I did but since very new to the L322 I really don't know what all made it across from BMW to the L322. And what is only specific to the L322.

Anyways waiting for further details and pics from you.

If it's anything like the LCM on the BMW/Rovers, then the max setting of the LCM is 150,000 miles - it doesn't update beyond that.

Luckily the mileage held on my Range Rover is 146000, the new cluster has about 130000 so I should be ok - hopefully...... ______________________________
