Zf trans fail safe - runs fine up to 10 miles

Hi guys,

Looking for some direction here.

I have a a 52plate 4.4v8. I have an issue with my gearbox which none of my local auto specialists have not seen.

It drives fine from cold. I do around 10 miles and it goes into fault mode.

The codes from the ecu are coming up as
AT
11 - b shift solenoid
- permanent

We have reset the code and it comes straight back.

I am also unable to select gears manually once the fault occurs.

I was all set to change the solenoid and wiring harness as per another thread on here. My local at specialist said he was happy to do so. But he wasn't convinced that it would solve the problem.

I spoke with another 2 or 3 companies around the south east and they seem to concur.

All believe that if it was the solenoid it would be from start up. The fact that it's fine after it has cooled down makes them think it's possible more serious.

Before I bite the bullet and have to put a second recon in ( the first only about 4000 miles ago but out of warrantee as over 2 years ago). Has anyone seen this before.

If I'm honest I was never happy with the original recon. Just didn't trust the company that did it. It seems with good reason ! We even noticed that the awkward top bolt on the top of the gear box was missing when we were dealing with an issue about a year later.

Hope you guys are able to give me some feed back on this.

On a side note other faults that are really bugging me that I can't solve and I'm sure are unrelated.

My steering wheel electric adjustment has a mind if it own. Sometimes when you turn on the ignition it dives down and won't stop when it reaches it's limit. Also same when retracting once the ignition is off. Seems like it doesn't know when it has reached its limit.

Just remembered that when I dropped it to my yard today even in fault mode reverse seemed ok. Not sure if that has any relevance

Have a search around, could it be a problem with the gearbox overheating?

RRphil is the expert on these boxes and specialises in refurbishing them so he knows them backwards and may be along soon with some more constructive advice. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The only time I get an overheat message is if I'm to heavy footed with it when it goes into fail safe and stays in 4th gear.

Makes pulling away interesting. But fault defiantly occurs before gets as far as a full overheat.

That does sound like the usual 5HP24 issue : http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post115201.html#115201

Presumably they failed to replace the 1058 202 016 bearing during the previous rebuild.

Hi Phil,

Thank you. Your link describes the fault perfectly.

Do you or any other people recommend anyone in the south London Surrey/Sussex area who would rebuild this.
I have taken the car of the road so worst case we could remove the gearbox and ship it.

What should I expect to pay for a rebuild ?

Anyone have any ideas on the steering wheel issue

Your best bet is to get the box removed and sent off to RRPhil, look here

Steering wheel is a very common problem, cheap answer is get the auto move mode switched off by someone with a diagnostic tool or if you plan on keeping it buy an IID tool and do it yourself...

Expensive option is get it fixed, will will probably run into thousands as you can't buy bits....

If you're lucky it's the part they sell on eBay, do a search and you'll find it.... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Pete

Maybe use this as a benchmark (£1650 including fluid and a re-manufactured torque converter) and do some ringing around to compare prices :

Phil won't tell you, he is too polite...

You won't get a better one, a lot of transmissions that are so called rebuilt are built to just enough to get through the warranty and then they will fail, it's not hard to bodge a box together that will last 12 months with old worn out parts, so if you go somewhere else make sure you get some recommendations.... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Pete
