Comma XStream G48 is what i was recommended and thats whats gone in over the last few years - its green. Current Fleet:-

Hi,

The OP when he started this thread said that he thought he should be using OAT antifreeze, when I looked I informed him that he should be using ethylene glycol based antifreeze not OAT and that it should be blue.

Upon further research into this subject it looks like the colour is not important as long as it is ethylene glycol based just like Comma Xstream G48.

I think a definitive discussion should take place regarding antifreeze and the different needs of differing engines and the years they were produced, as I've found that people vehemently defend what's in their Range Rover despite the information that's available to them.

Although I must admit, the information in RAVE is confusing as the earlier editions say ethylene glycol only and the later editions say OAT or ethylene glycol..

Well what I do to every vehicle I have had for years works for me...

Drain the system, back flush as much as you can by removing every pipe you can find and squirting copious amounts of water from a hose through everywhere....

Then fill it with the cheapest antifreeze I can get...

Then repeat this every year....

Don't mix them and don't leave it in longer than a year and I have had no problems with freezing, corrosion or sludging..  Pete

I'll admit I used Euro car parts blue antifreeze, not only because it was ethylene glycol but because it was on offer and cheap... ______________________________

Simon you are correct that the colour doesn't really mean anything. Different manufactures use different colours etc. I also agree that a discussion should take place as long as I don't get confused

After reading it, I'm thinking OAT is the best bet as the silicate caused some problems in the Asia market with water pumps failing etc. As I'm changing every part of the cooling system I would to keep it tip top long term knowing the coolant problems these engines can have. It does make you question, is it the antifreeze that has been used from factory with the silicate in it causing the issues? 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

Ok lots more research and web reading which has taken up far too much of my time

Some of the OAT coolants have eaten away at seals and gaskets in some engines not designed for it, it should only be used in engines that rolled off the production line using OAT coolant. The same goes for silicate based coolants for certain engines like Japanese cars, damaged is caused to seals and waterpumps in those engines. That's where the HOAT stuff comes in as its pretty much universal and can be mixed with both types of coolant and used in modern cars from all over the world. The exception is older engines in classics cars, same goes for OAT that's not to be used in classic cars either only coolant with silicate in. All these coolants are eythlene glycol based and the OAT or silicates are the corrosion additives with the HOAT (Hybrid OAT) having both silicates and OAT corrosion inhibitors/additives. The OAT coolants work by chemical conversion over time (hence the long life) to reduce corrosion and silicates work by coating the cooling system to form a barrier against corrosion but needs changing every two years. The HOAT coolant does both and gets to work straight away. The further differences in the coolants is things like phosphate and nitrates which can affect the engine over time depending on materials used to build the engine.

For the purpose of this post the 4.4 petrol V8 M62 is a BMW engine I did my research on that more specifically and I've come to the conclusion that G48 which has silicates and is phosphate and nitrate free is the most suitable coolant for the M62 BMW engine mixed 50/50 due to the Alusil M62 engine blocks. The use of distilled water or not, I'm not sure on that one yet. There is talk that European water has a higher mineral content that interferes with the coolant but not so much in the USA. Maybe just get some anyway as its not mega expensive.

I like to think I know a little more than I did about coolants a week ago, I had a fair idea about the different types but I wanted to know more and the implications inside the engine being as I've spend a lot of money replacing all the top end gaskets in my engine and cooling system overhaul.

It's good you've come to the same conclusion I did about a month ago, it took me a couple of weeks slogging around the Internet and talking to very well informed people to get to that conclusion. I looked at the G48 and then looked at the price, it was then that I found that the blue antifreeze from euro car parts was the same specification as the G48 but much lower in price.

I mixed it with deionised water from halfords which was £3.99 for 5 litres, I later found that I could have bought the same water from euro car parts for £2.99 @5 litres but it's small change.

I use Comma Xstream G48 Antifreeze & Coolant Concentrate XSG5L Ethylene Glycol TL774-C £23 for 5 litres - so terrific value from Comma and I change the coolant every 12 months or so - am doing it again on Friday in fact, and thought I would post on this thread, as I have had no problems for the last 5 or so years with this Comma stuff since the thread was started back in 2016 - have also told plenty of other M62 Petrol owners and they are happy with it as well, its Green ish in colour, so you can't mistake it for anything else !
