Ffrr 4.4tdv8 owners

Hi can any 4.4tdv8 shed any light on reliability. If they have got better than the older ones I.e had a 4.2 sc 2005 and I felt I was replacing a lot of things and was never away from garage. I would be using a specialist to get any work done if and when needed. Just curious as I know every car has problems etc but my 2005 must have been unlucky. Thanks if any owners would like to chip in then it would be great. Thumbs Up

My 2012 4.4'is better than my 3.6 but I don't think that expecting them to run like a Skoda diesel is a good idea.

So far I have had

New tailgate struts as rusty
New Aux belt pulley as had a bit of play
New discs
New new front strut as airbag had hole
Recall on flexi hoses
New top intercooler hose as O ring was leaking past

The rear brakes and calipers were changed before I got it, probably because they were binding.

But that is about it so far not too bad in 16 months.

Now approaching 45k so in the next 15k I expect that it will need

New ARB drop links
New front arms
New front ball joints

And have a niggle with the heating vents which I haven't looked at yet

Again it's down to how well it has been looked after. The chap who had mine was quite fastidious so it was pretty
Much unmarked with a fsh and low milage. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi thanks a lot for your reply. That doesn't sound to bad as it's all typical stuff that wears. I was more concerned regarding big stuff like gearbox and transfer box, compressor as that's what went on my 2005 and hope that they have improved with age and become more reliable. 👍

I now looking at 3.6 tdv8 as they are good value just now and the 4.4 tdv8 that I was looking at just sold. How different are they apart from 8 gears slightly better fuel economy and gear knob. I know I just can't decide what to take the gamble with.

Mine had quite a few problems during the first three years, but has been better since:

Corrosion - I think less good than early cars, I have had replacement of upper tailgate, tailgate struts, lower tailgate cable, door trim (twice), wheels, wheel centre caps, wheel nuts, also corrosion on rear wheel arches, LR declined to repair, citing "external influence - weather conditions", upper tailgate struts are rusty again.

New gearbox due to leak from where it joins engine.

Two battery drains due to software problems, one related to fuel burning heater, one to locking, on one of these new battery required as could no longer hold charge.

Build issues - dash had to be rebuilt twice due to buzzing/rattling, two door seal repositionings required, one due to water leaking into rear seat area, another door seal replaced as fittings defective, boot trim needed to be repositioned.

Rear brake seizure.

Fog light fuse blew, cause unknown.

Since the warranty expired it has, in almost a year, been fine except for occasional failure of mirror heating, that might be my fault as I reversed it into a tree and parts had to be replaced, I suspect there is just a loose contact. I'm not convinced about the repainted rear wheel arches. My shiny finish style 11 summer wheels are corroding again, they seem to have quite thin lacquer that is easily damaged by stone chips, especially on the dishes and then little runs of corrosion develop underneath. Beyond that I am happy (and am touching wood).

On comparison with the 3.6, I don't know from a reliability perspective, but thought the 3.6 a reasonable substitute for the 4.4 petrol I had before, the 4.4 TDV8 however is better, faster, more economical and smoother running due to the 8 speed gearbox. I also think if one has a sound 4.4 TDV8 322 it is hard to justify the £30,000 to £70,000 or whatever premium to get a 405 and some early 405s are pretty scruffy. Only Range Rovers since 1988

That is a lot for a new car. The 3.6 in question is up to a 2010 reg. My 2005 sc had rust etc but I thought that was due to age wouldn't expect that on a 3-4 year old car. If I go down the 3.6 route I would get the gearbox flushed and get a full inspection done before purchase to eliminate any nasty surprises. Thanks a lot for everyone's input. 👍

You can get the same corrosion/ failing paint on 2012MY just as you can on 2005 etc... For me, always check the upper tailgate and rear arches in particular.

There is a brake hose recall on the 2012MY (got that and a few other snags addressed before finalising the sale).

Having moved from an all that glitters is not gold/ *nightmare* of a cosmetically immaculate 2007 SC to a cosmetically immaculate 2012MY 4.4TDV8, we're in the 'not missed a beat' camp since getting the 4.4. Not yet anyway.

Since buying it 15 months and 13,000 miles ago, not even had call to use the LR warranty yet, however after reading nmj's list of things, perhaps I should get busy with scrutinising the LR warranty coverage Laughing

I've changed the front and rear diff oils and the transfer case oil; and have replaced the wiper blades; and have prepared the rear arches/ put new protective plastic strips on them; and have replaced a few swollen wheel nuts... All by way of preventative maintenance.

Had it serviced at LR main dealer this year (£635 for major service) and it passed an MOT, all with no advisories yet.

The car does need a software upgrade that will cost about £50 at a main dealer to eradicate slight hesitancy at motorway cruising speeds.

Thumbs Up

Not missed a beat

A few niggles though.

New battery and change of battery management unit to a constant charging unit - works perfectly now
Tailgate corrosion
OMG...never had so many swollen nuts
Been reluctant to start on Tesco diesel, but never had a problem on shell or BP

I replaced gearbox and diff fluids at 30k miles. Will do again at 60k.
I think I have a good un. I will be keeping it.
53k miles so far.

What is the constant charging unit?
Can you sit and listen to the radio with the engine off without getting low battery warning after a few minutes?

This is my biggest beef with mine.
I keep the battery fully charged, and never had starting problem, but sit listening to the radio with ignition on, bong!!

Hi the 3.6 tdv8 I'm looking at is a 10 plate with 69000 on the clock looks good and is in grey. Thinking on trading A7 in for it. Should I get gearbox flush done as a precaution and get a check done on it?

Battery management

Newer FFRRs have a fairly clever charging mechanism so that when the battery is fully charged, the car stops charging it.
I was very upset with poor battery performance when I bought mine....letters to chairman and to Gaydon which ultimately resulted in a visit from the factory with a change of battery management unit for an older style one.
The AGM batteries are better suited to the new technology.....but at least I can now listen to the radio with the engine off !

My 2012MY has been ok - fuel sensor failures twice and a turbo went necessitating recovery by AA

It was frustrating and the short dispute over whether the turbo was covered by the warranty was irritating but all was sorted in the end

At this point it's going well
