Might be the battery in the fob and if it is open up one side where the actual key is go round to the passenger side and I am guessing like mine the small door handle cover prises off lock the car manually with the key Thumbs Up

Have a read through this Thumbs Up

Models
LM - New Range Rover

Title 10MY Smart Key Not Found
Last Modified 13-JAN-2010 11:51
Category Electrical
Symptom 203000 Basic Electrical
Content

Issue
The Ignition will not turn on / Engine will not start and the message 'Smart Key Not Found' is the displayed on the Instrument Pack message centre.

Cause
Currently Engineering has identified several concerns with regards to this message and in order to help correct the concern the following steps must be performed.
The problem is identified as Transponder Lock Up, in this scenario the Transmitter within the Smart Key is blocked from making the appropriate transmission to the vehicle. The failure mode is intermittent and therefore it is not always repeatable.

Action

1. Determine if the concern is a result of Medium Speed CAN. Can you communicate to the vehicle's Medium Speed CAN using SDD?

a. YES – The Medium Speed CAN is operating properly. Continue to step 2.
b. NO – Proceed with diagnosing why the Medium Speed CAN is not responding.

2. Remove fuse 17P (5amps) from the Passenger Compartment Fuse Box. Wait one minute. Insert fuse 17P (5amps) into the Passenger Compartment Fuse Box. Has the 'Smart Key Not Found' message cleared?

a. YES – STOP. At this point you've diagnosed a concern with the KVM's software. Engineering is currently looking into this condition to understand what is causing the KVM to enter this locked state. A further communication will follow once the root cause has been determined. Furthermore, the concern could happen again and it is advisable to alert the customer that if the condition occurs they will need remove fuse 17P (5amps) from the Passenger Compartment Fuse Box in order to recover the KVM. Make the customer aware that we are working on a resolution and will deliver one ASAP.
b. NO – Continue to step 3.

3. If steps 1 and 2 have not rectified the concern, then the problem is identified as Transponder Lock Up, in this scenario the transmitter within the Smart Key is blocked from making the appropriate transmission to the vehicle. The failure mode is intermittent and therefore it is not always repeatable. Replace the original two and any subsequent keys the customer has for the vehicle. Updated keys are available, under the following numbers via a Critical Parts Order.

Did you get to the bottom of this by the way?
Mine has just started doing this after I had the main car battery replaced. Seems to be working at the moment, but I would like to get out in front of any future problems.

I've being reading through many forums and some people suggest it might be linked to smart phones and or other back-lit LCD screens, I'm assuming they mean sat navs or tablets etc.
I had just installed a new Tom Tom as the ff sat nav is woeful to be honest so this might be relevant or just a coincidence, I'll experiment and report back.
Will replace the smart key battery tomorrow and see if that helps.
Question. Does the key need to be resynced after battery replacement? I assumed it would but I haven't found the procedure during my searches, would someone be kind enough to enlighten me please?

Much thanks
Pete.

Ahh ok, thanks for taking the time to let me know, much appreciated.

I'm hoping the battery change in the key will help. I know changing the battery is easy but I'm still trying to find out if the key needs resyncing and if so, how to do it.
I can't find my manual, swmbo has had a tidy up lol!

Just found the handbook in a drawer shock horror lol.

According to the handbook all I need to do is change the battery with no mention of resyncing or if it has to be done in a certain time frame.
As this is my only key in being a little bit cautious to be honest.

As I understand it from reading the manual, as long as the message is on screen, I can unlock with the key and hold the unit to the underneath the dash to start and continue to use the car until I get another key and shirt the problem.
Am I understanding this right? Can anyone confirm please?

Cheers
Pete

Well before changing the battery in the fob, (still going to change), I thought I might look into the smartphone interference theory because I just need to know now. If I was a cat, I would be long dead!

I separated the fob and smartphone putting the fob in the door handle recess and left the smartphone in the centre console where they had both been before.
So far the problem has not resurfaced but I will continue to test for the next few weeks before changing the key battery.

Hope this helps if others are having similar problems.
