Strange symptoms... What the hell... 07 TDV8 90k

Here's an interesting challenge for someone to identify.....

No Faults showing on Autologic Diagnostics.

2007 TDV8 with less than 90k. (with Autologic Remap)

Engine noise and performance have been intermittently variable for a couple of years, but becoming more regular... as in about 75% of the time.

-Very Clackety engine (like we're talking Massy Ferguson Noise here).
-Very strong diesel fumes smell at idle.
-Echo / Resonance sound both at idle and driving. (intermittent but becoming more regular)
-When Echo noise happens, Engine Temp Gauge drops to Zero.
-Also, when Echoing, engine drives on when foot OFF the accelerator.
-Not sure if related, but gearbox also seems to have "pregnant pause" on changeup.
-Dark clouds of smoke under acceleration
-lite smoke from pipes on startup
-poor MPG

.......BUT IT'S INTERMITTENT !!!!

In recent years many parts have been replaced:
- EGR valves
- Viscous Fan
- Intercooler and Pipes

Serviced regularly.
Oil change at least 2 or 3 times per year.
Gearbox oil and filter changed annually.

Big Cry Wrecking my head Big Cry
Indy Dealer scatching his head and worried about the financial risk of trying fixes.
- Is is Fuel Pressure?
- Is it Injectors?
- Faulty NEW EGR Valves?
- Is it Timing?
- Is it ECU
- Is it ?????????????

Any Guru's out there that can shed some light on this? FullFat Porridge

Temp sensor? At least old RRC efi runs very rich when that gets broken. Maybe they inherited this feature also to tdv8. Laughing Could be also loose connector or broken wire. -08 3.6 Vogue

Wouldn't a faulty temp sensor throw up a fault code? FullFat Porridge

Not sure about TDV8 diagnostics capabilities but older BMW V8 can detect failed temp sensor if problem lasts long enough.

Have you been able to get live data to confirm temp reading when gauge is down? -08 3.6 Vogue
