2004 vogue DSP connectors

Hi all, I am trying to rewire the 18 pin connector plug ( co492) on my 2004 vogue with DSP and built in phone , due to the dreaded corrosion ! I got a bit mixed up with the pinouts and when I referred to the workshop manual it showed 8 wires, whereas mine has 9 ! I noticed that the BMW forums were showing a 9 wire pinout diagram but wondered if anyone can help with the l322 pin out arrangement. Thanks in advance.

To add to the confusion, the electric circuit diagram only shows 5 connections for this plug ! pin 5 the i-bus wire, pins 8,9,17 and 18 the pre amp wires from the BM54 unit . The four wires not shown appear to be for the telephone . The workshop manual states they are for Telephone audio negative,Telephone audio positive, and Telephone on.The 9th wire is shown on the BMW forums as "telephone mute".

In my dealings with my DSP this week, this is what I found on a BMW forum:

The pinouts for the 15 pin connector, the one with the large pins and the slide lock connector.
Connector 491
1. Subwoofer Rear Deck, Left +
2. Subwoofer Rear Deck, Left Center +
3. Left Rear Door Woofer -
4. Radio on/antenna trigger signal (12v)
5. Right Rear Door Woofer +
6. Subwoofer Rear Deck, Right -
7. Subwoofer Rear Deck, Right Center -
8. 12 V Power Source
9. Subwoofer Rear Deck, Left -
10. Subwoofer Rear Deck, Left Center -
11. Left Rear Door Woofer +
12. Right Rear Door Woofer -

5. I-bus Signal Line - Splice X18344
6. Not used
7. Not used
8. Right Preamp Output – (*** Possible Translation Error: By this I think they mean the pre-amp output that is fed to the DSP as its input - applies to three similar 'outputs' as well)
9. Left Preamp Output –
10. Not used
11. Low freq. voltage (+) signal - Transceiver/charging electronics (DSP)
12. Not used
13. Telephone mute signal - Transceiver/charging electronics
14. Not used
15. Telephone ON signal - Transceiver/charging electronics
16. Not used
17. Right Preamp Out +

Here are the pinouts for the 26 pin connector:

12. Right Front Tweeter +
13. Right Front Woofer +
14. Left Front Tweeter +
15. Left Front Tweeter -
16. Left Rear Mid-range -
17. Not used
18. Not used
19. Left rear mid-range speaker/tweeter +

21. Not used
22. Not used
23. Not used
24. Right rear mid-range speaker/tweeter -
25. Right Front Tweeter -

Does that help, or add further confusion? My electronics units are currently spread out over the boot, so if you have a question relating to a specific wire colour then reply on here and I'll check periodically through the day...

Can you wait an hour or so whilst I go and scribble down the colours for you? Don't risk mis-connecting, 'cos if you stick 12V up what is intended to be a TTL input you may cause damage.

I now realise where I was going wrong ! I was reading the pinout diagram upside down thinking they were showing the pins on the dsp when actually they are showing looking at the plug from underneath . (if that makes sense !)And therefore the i-bus wire was in the pin opposite , and thats why i can't get the dsp to show up on the screen !! Once I get the connector sorted I will let you know if i get my sound back.Incidentally, I have obtained a spare Dsp out of an X5 2004 model. Will I need to get it programmed for the L322 ? either way I got an auction bargain ! A DSP , a six CDchanger, a ULF module with passkey 7th gen., a subwoofer , all for £10 !!!

That really is a bargain.
Regarding coding a DSP: I have read, as I assume have you, a lot of conflicting information about the need to code DSPs.
What I do know is that when I use NavCoder to interrogate the DSP I do get a set of tell-backs (including the last six chars of the VIN)
I think, and it really is only 'think' that the coding to the car alters the DSP's processing algorithms to optimise the sonic experience according to the acoustic characteristics of the car.
I think also it alters the speed vs volume graph, and a few other settings.
From all my digging, and I Bus recording, I can find absolutely no indication that a DSP will refuse to work if it discovers that it isn't fitted to the type of car that it thinks it should be.
That said, if it expects to see a Head Unit (Bordmonitor), a Nav Unit and a Radio (BM54) then I know from experience that it will throw a hissy fit if it realises that one or other is missing.

All sorted ! Wires correctly pinned out as per your photos zulu 10, and X5 dsp fitted, just in time for my trip to Barmouth in Wales on saturday morning ! Unfortunately I had to turn the music off halfway as my wife couldn't stand the "trance " music bellowing out ! Ah well ! By the way Zulu 10, can you supply your christian name as I write articles for the Range Rover Register club magazine and I would like to mention your help in my next one. Cheers, Bob

Glad it works Bob, as now does my iPod and touchscreen install. There's honestly no need to mention me in your magazine, but if it pleases you then, in the words of Paul Simon, you can call me Al.
