Question for PC builders

I've got a Dell Dimension which is knocking on a bit now by todays standards, but still does what I need it to do.

Anyway - a few weeks ago, it started bleeping on startup. Looking at the Dell site, the bleeps indicated an overheating problem. I stripped it down today and blew all the dust out, clean the Motherboard with some electrical cleaner and I noticed a build up of grey crud on the heatsink, where it sits on the processor on the motherboard. I wiped it all off both faces and re-assembled it.
Booted it up and no bleeps! However- the fan is quite audible now and seems to just keep speeding up to the point where I shut down the PC for fear of it taking off!

Any ideas whats making this fan so damn fast/loud? 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

OMG you removed the Thermal Paste!?

Go buy some thermal paste and re-apply - DO NOT run it without it as you will burn the CPU out!

Just checked it and there's a little tiny bit left on the CPU (phew). I wiped the majority off the heatsink to be honest.
