Before you go to a gearbox specialist check the temperature of the discs after a short run. Common fault is sticking caliper, usually rear, which gives those symptoms.

You don’t need a gearbox specialist. Any competent mechanic should be able to replace the torque converter, there’s no need to open up the transmission.

In April 2014 I had my cattle grid symptoms eliminated by replacing the torque convertor and the cost was £804.04 inc VAT. The work came with a 12 month / 36,000 mile warranty. 2003 4.4 HSE Epsom Green / Sand. Lovely! |

I haven't seen enough threads discussing cattle grid to get a useful average mileage for when it occurs. Of the one or two threads I have seen, I seem to recall them discussing cars at very roughly the 100k mileage point. Mine was done at 142,075. 2003 4.4 HSE Epsom Green / Sand. Lovely! |

RRphil is the man but mine had just started when I firstt got the beast at 119k miles. Changed the fluid and filter and it got much better. Have changed the fluid only 2 more times since. Tranny smooth as can be. 136k miles now. So it might be worth considering this first. My rumble was mostly at lower rpms in 5th. Sounded like driving highway rumble strips that keep you from going off the road if you fall asleep. |

I had exactly the same symptoms as you describe and was resigned to a replacement torque converter, but turned out to be a sticky calliper, front o/s on mine as it happens. Drives:
