Does anyone know if the vehicle you want to remove a cherished plate from needs an mot or not? I know this used to be the case as it cost me a lot of money to mot my dads morris minor so that I could transfer the plate to my car, however about 6 months after I did this someone told me that mots were no longer required.

Now a friend of mine wants to do the same but the vehicle has no mot, her mechanic has told her it needs a test, however according to the government website all you need is the logbook the fee and a sorn notification in place. And it needs to be available for inspection.

Anyone help please?

As far as I know, it can be without an MOT as long as it is on a SORN. The problem is that if you've let that lapse, then you need to get it taxed and for that you need an MOT.....

I guess you could just apply for a SORN directly & see what happens

I wasn't aware you could do the removal without an MOT.... We have done some quite extensive work on customer cars for the sole purpose of removing the customers private plate... As recently as the last few months too...

As alistair says, maybe they had let the sorn's lapse?

Or you can transfer onto a retention document - you pay the fee to transfer onto a vehicle but it is just on a retention document or at least you used to be able to

The donor vehicle must have the following
registered with DVLA
taxed or have a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) in place within the last 5 years
available for inspection
