Well, it has finally happened. I took the car into Kwik-fit a couple of months ago to have an oil and filter change and when I came to change my winter wheels and tyres to my summer set, I noticed that all the nuts were really tight and had obviously been put back on with an air gun. I'd forgotten that they would also do a brake check as part of the "service" and so stupidly didn't warn them not to use an air gun - not that you should have to!

Anyway, I managed to get three of the locking nuts off but the fourth just started spinning. The top part had broken its' link with the bottom part. I was all set up to hack away at it with my rotary tool but as I was going over to Mansfield on business, I thought I would make a detour to Dynomec in Castleford as they said they could get it off for £10.

I arrived, they set to it and five minutes later, I was on my way with the nut off:) Great price, great service and no swearing! Highly recommend them. MY 2007 3.6 TDV8 Vogue SE

Arguably you should have gone back to Kwik Fit & insisted they do it, but £10 well spent IMHO

I did think about it but decided that as it was a couple of months ago, I couldn't actually prove it and that they may well make a mess of my wheels if they didn't have the right tool, that it probably wasn't worth the aggro. MY 2007 3.6 TDV8 Vogue SE

Yep, I had to have one of mine professionally removed, first thing I did was to remove the rest and fit standard nuts. Geoff

I am taking delivery of an L322 this week, and please explain to me the locking nuts , as the first thing i will be doing is having all wheels balanced.

Locking wheel nuts are a pain, just about all L322's have them and I always replace them with standard wheel nuts. Given the nuisance they can be and that they are no real deterrent to thieves there seems little benefit to them.

Here is a good place to start

If the car has an odd wheel nut doesn't match the other 4 - then make sure they show you where the key is.

It may not have them - in which case all 5 must will be the same & standard.

One of our labourers lost the locking key for his focus, and got a flat on the way to work last week. He called out the RAC and they came and changed his wheel but put back on the locking nut on the biscuit spare so he was back in the same situation!

We happened to have our plant mechanic out to the forklift and asked if he could get them off. 10 mins later all the nuts were off. Obviously had done it before

Keep meaning to take mine off but haven't got round to it yet, the tyre garage I use don't use a windy gun to put the wheels back on.but one time it went to quickies they came back so tight I had to used a 2ft bar...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Most definitely a major PIA. Bin them asap. I just had a major drama with them.

I also had problems with the regular nuts. The alloy caps distort when treated by a rattle gun by a tyre shop. If wheel nut caps feel loose while wheel nuts are tight, it's time to replace the wheel nut.

I have a few wheel nuts where I can't fit a wheel brace over the nut as its distorted. I will be replacing all wheel nuts with loose caps. ______________________________
