You know when you wish you hadn't read something?

I love my 22" Overfinch Olympus wheels.

However I noticed the other day that some of the wheel bolts (the cosmetic ones on the wheel spokes - not the ones that hold the wheels on) were a little rusty.

Read somewhere that a few hours soaking in cider vinegar (I assume any acid works) gets them good as new with a little scrubbing action from an old toothbrush.

Annoyingly it works a charm. I say annoyingly as now I'm going to waste hours of tomorrow scrubbing bolts and smelling like a bag of chips. Rolling Eyes

Still. It's all in the details. Before and after shot below.

LOL, there are blokes over on detailing world who would be acid dipping, zinc electroplating them, and if they didn't like the colour they would then silver plate them. I kid you not. Laughing

many acids are available to kill rust. like vinegar, daddies sauce etc. but if you need to say clean an old fuel tank, (metal) you can use a harmless to skin phosphoric acid, from ebay, or those hydroponic wholesalers. but best of all, is the travis perkins 'brick acid' or also known as 36% muriatic acid (strongest available to public) (hydrochloric) , again from ebay. pour it in, (£18 for 5litres) and watch it find holes you didnt know you had. slosh it around, and it will clean light rust, in a few minutes. heavy rusting leave it sealed and shake daily, for a week.
however, now you have a super clean tank. you rinse it with say water, and it will flash rust before your eyes.
so rinse out with diesel, or even some pure alcohol, if pouring in some tankseal.

looks like those wheelbolts are stainless, but if they re-rust, perhaps next time, put them all in a cup of laquer, slosh and empty out, when back on the wheel, paint the torx sockets with same. should see them good for ages.
note. use eyeshields, and gloves with the brick acid. its used to clean walls/graffitti/ and patios. and it kills your nose so do it outside.

one other thing thesedays, dont buy the typical nitromors paint stripper, you thought will strip paint like old days. its now gone EU unfriendly, so it doesnt work. you need to search ebay/web for paint stripper with methylene chloride. (like the old stuff) you have to tick a box on payment (coshh) that you understand its dangers. and then you can strip paint properly. the stuff on wharehouse shelves, hardly takes the skin off a rice pudding. its useless. it says improved formula. they must have meant 'unimproved.' ive drunk stronger homebrew. !!

make sure it says methylene chloride and danger etc.

Reckon that was worth it. Look miles better.

Next thing is to remove the wheels and paint the hubs silver and the calipers gloss black.
