Fixed towbar pictures needed please

Narrowing down the search for a ffrr I have found one i like but it does not have the electric towbar, the dealer said they will fit a fixed one Shocked does any one have a picture of one? Don't want to loose the looks of the back end!! 2010 defender utility

There is a small picture in the LR accessory catalogue which can also be seen by googling "Range Rover L405 multi height tow bar", but it does not give perspective of the whole car. I have only seen one once. It is, as you would expect, much less neat than the electric one. I thought it stuck out a long way and would be detrimental to the departure angle if that is important to you.

The L322 towbar can of course be unbolted from the armature when not in use and the hole filled with a square rubber plug. I don't know whether the 405 installation is the same, but if it is, it would be relatively quick and easy to do (subject to overcoming the tendency of dealers to fit towbars dry and with air tools, resulting in the nut being very tight and difficult to get off, also it needs to go back on very tight to avoid the bar clunking in the armature when the trailer goes over bumps). Subject to having a safe storage space for the loose bar when not in use that would give you the cleaner rear line again.

I have a vague recollection of reading on here that the fixed bar had a higher nose rating than the electric one, I don't know if that is right but it might be another advantage. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Hopefully it will be the removable type, doesn't look to bad. I have also heard about the electric one being limited on weight, I do tow quite a heavy caravan when laden for holls

I am pretty sure the fixed towbar is not a removable type like in the Disco or L322, the L405 has to have some rather large brackets fitted if you don't have the electric type, that's certainly what the pictures seem to show. 2021 L405 Vogue D300

I looked into it - the L405 one is similar to the L322 - its a 50mm square armature and what looks very similar to the drop plate / farmers tow bar.

The drop place unit can be removed - easily if you use a pin and not a bolt - just like the L322

In the end I kept looking & found a better car with an electric deployable already fitted.




When removed, it looks very similar to the L322 armature but a bit more discrete

Trouble is I have been looking for a while now and finding it very hard to find the Range Rover I want, I am very fussy, well it has to be right with this price tag!

The powered tow ball is limited to a towing weight of only 1,000kgs off-road. The maximum nose weight is also limited to 200kgs instead of 250kgs

True - we discussed that on another thread - but 200Kg nose weight is still pretty high and off road towing is irrelevant for most.

Looks like its something to do with the overrun brakes, but not sure why......

Certainly in the UK, and most of the EU for that matter there are few (if any) towed items (trailers, caravans etc) which have a 50mm ball hitch that is rated to 200Kg. The Alko (most common) is 100Kg and the one which BPW use (Winterhoff I think) is 150Kg. Your caravan will be one of the above for sure so the electric deployable unit will be fine.

If you want to go over those weights on the nose you have to use a ring type hitch which would mean the Farmer's hitch option anyway. This is why I converted my Ifor Williams trailer to a ring hitch, because there are situations where I need more than 150kg on the hitch.

Off road is largely irrelevant unless we're talking about a camping trailer and I would opt for a NATO military coupling there. Not type approved mind you so technically not legal on the road. Off road it is by far the best IMHO though both for strength and articulation.

I am not sure what Land Rover means by "off-road" but we use our FFRR to tow a horse trailer which often gets parked in fields and with a horse or two weighs over 1,000kgs. I suspect that the limit is therefore relevant to a number of users, at least in theory.

I was not aware of the 1000 kg off road limit, but that would be a significant restriction for moving logs, wheat, peat etc, even with a single axle goods trailer (ours is rated for 2600 kg). Only Range Rovers since 1988
