Instrument Cluster Lights not working, Headlights affected

Hi

I'm a couple of months into ownership of my first FFRR (a 2002 Vogue 4.4L) after flirting with a Disco for a couple of years in the past.

It's been a fun car so far, and currently I've upgraded the ICE to a new Android unit (with many thanks to the write up by Haylands!)

Additionally I'm part through installing a wifi reverse camera and some new side steps.

The problem I am facing is since I have owned it the iinstrument cluster would occassionally flicker when the lights were turned on, before staying on. Also the pixels are going too on the display.

This weekend however the instrument lights now do not turn on at all. I took the trim off around the steering wheel to check for broken cable/connections and everything seems in order.

Also, the main beams do not work when the headlights are turned off so I cannot flash with the lights off. When the headlights are turned on, the controls on the indicator stalk arent working as usual- pushing the stalk away from the wheel to activite the main beams doesn't work, they are actually on when in the middle position, and therefore because they are on in that position, when you pull to flash, it actually turns them off instead of on.

I would welcome any thoughts if anyone has any advice, or has faced the problem themselves and subsequently found a solution!

The cluster lights should dim with all the instrument and waterfall lights in the car. Are they all flickering? The current to the lights is controlled by the lcm. Rather than relays, They are transistor drivers. I had one go on mine years ago. I was able to open up the the lcm and see the transistor had burned out. I was also able to read the chip Id and from that find a replacement for about £10, but didn't go any further. I would be a case of in soldering and re soldering the new one onto the board. V8 or else ...

The LCM ECU can be found in the RH footwell behind the A post lower trim (on UK cars next to the Accelerator Pedal) .

Thanks for the replies fisha & Joe90!

I've removed the LCM and its unclear if anything has blown, there's a few that look suspect however I havent the time to fully investigate it.

I have found a company on ebay that will diagnose and fix the LCM for £85- they have 100% positive reviews (over 2000) and will refund the £85 if they cant fix it. This works perfectly for me as I'm going away for 2 weeks tomorrow so I can send it off and ideally it will be fixed and returned when I get back. If its fixed, great, if not, I'll then have the time to investigate properly.

Here's the link http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Range-Rover-Land...3641.l6368

If anyone has any experience with them I would be happy to hear about it- i'll report how I get on with it!

Your full beam issue is down the the LH stalk needing replacing... Quite common on early FF's Thumbs Up

Thanks Craig, so would your thinking be I have two separate issues in this case? One with the indicator stalk for the headlight issue, and one with the LCM for the instrument lights not working?

They say it comes in three's... Whats next I wonder!

I sent the LCM off for repair and its fixed the headlight issues.

It hasn't however, fixed the instrument dial lights and centre console lights. (The warning lights and gear number lights along the bottom work fine however)

Any advice for what we think this could be if its not the LCM?

When I took my cluster out to have my pixels repaired a while after I started getting faults whereby I wouldn't have any dash lights showing, the indicators wouldn't work or they worked but I didn't have the lights on the dash or the ticking noise.
Apologies for linking to another site but this is my thread about it.
I basically took the clicks out and reseated all the connections and I was away again but have a look at my thread to see if you have a similar issue

Have you tried the cluster test, I'll put up a link to one on YouTube

Thanks Holidaychicken, gave that a go when I had the dash board off to install the wifi revere camera to the head unit. All the connections to the dials seemed fine and gave them a check. Ran the cluster test, still no lights!

Wonder if the next solution will be to try a replacement LCM perhaps..

My connections seek=med ok but i removed them and replaced them and that seemed to do the trick. the LCM is prone to getting wet, cant remember but do you have any diagnostics faults ?

Ah so you replaced them anyway. Maybe shouldve done that!

Mine from a visual inspection seemed absolutely fine.

The LCM i had repaired and the fault i sent it for was fixed. There is visable water damage on there still so could probably do with being replaced just to strike that from the list..

No diagnostic faults at all.

Lets see when I can be bothered to take the dash apart again to get to the cluster haha! Do you know the part numbers for the connectors? Would be more motivated to do it if I had them ready to fit on!

sorry confusing you with a typo as well, i disconnected them and reconnected them which may have done the trick, they certainly worked ok after. so the part numbers are free.
Mine stopped working so the only thing i could think off was to replace the cluster but took it apart to check for anything obvious and to check the connections but all was ok and when i put it back together it worked.
Might be worth a try.
Maybe the LCM could still be faulty but i think if you swap you get a mileage tamper error as i think the mileage is backed up in the LCM
