L322 TD6 - Coolant level issue vs possibility head gasket

Hello,

I'm having a strange issue with my L322.
When i'm driving at 140km/h i get the message on the dashboard to verify the coolant level.
The 1st time i got this message i checked later the level and was ok.
Later i verified low level and i needed to add some water... until today i have good level, but every time i go at 140km/h i the warning, the message verify the coolant level. Even after added the water i made the test and after passing the 140km/h i get the message.

I spoke in a Bosh service garage that fixed my injectors and he told me it could be a head gasket issue. I placed the radiator all night in 2bar pressure and didn't verify any leak.

I never saw the temperature out of the 12 o'clock, is always normal.

If i run a trip at 120km/h never see any waring about the coolant level!

Any thoughts? Sad Rolling Eyes could be a simple thing and not a head gasket issue?

Many Thanks,
Best regards,

There can be a few causes for coolant loss, but if you're not actually losing coolant then it may be the coolant level sensor in the expansion tank. Replace the expansion tank! The sensor floats can stick or break up.

If you ARE losing coolant, then there are lots of places to look - radiator, hoses at front of engine, hoses at rear, valley pan - before going for the head gasket.

Thanks Ian,

I think i'm loosing coolant, because i added some time ago like one litre or more... but since i have added the water in the tank, the level is ok, but i donīt go over 140km/h many times.

The thing is that in the garage they put the radiator in pressure 2bars all night and didn't show any leaks!

Other thing is i only have the warning when i drive fast or else the car is always normal! Ex-FULLFATTY now downgraded

Sorry, I'm an idiot. You have a TD6 not a V8, right? OK, if it's only losing coolant when hot, maybe something is leaking when it's affected by the heat. That's suggesting the radiator.

Pop the fan shroud off and have a look for coolant residue.

Everything you need to know here:

In short most probably the coolant tank and sensor. Get a new one (coolant tank - which includes the sensor) and problem should go away. ( In my opinion it is not worth just getting a sensor, as the glass inside the coolant tank is probably clouded over, causing part of the problem)

If that doesn't work, then it will be to work your way through the other components: main thermostat, EGR thermostat, radiator, pipe work. If you are loosing some coolant, also check how well sealed the bleed screws are. I had a pressure leak which i solved with some gasket sealant.

Thumbs Up .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Thanks Ian and Joe.

Joe looks the same problem and same symptoms! Many Thanks!!! I'm so much more relief!!!

Head Gasket was a very scary and expensive problem!

Do you know what is the number part for the coolant tank?

Many Thanks,
Best Regards!
