underwhelmed

drove an 08 tdv8 today in my search, car was quite tidy, right sort of money and the right sort of spec but i have to say that i was a bit underwhelmed with the drive.

i have being in a 12 plate Q7 now for 6 months, it has the later 8 speed box; when i compare it to that the RR is like chalk and cheese and not in a good way. its £10k cheaper than my Q7 but i thought that it woukd be a comparable ride? Q7 quieter and smoother..... is the 4.4tdv8 a massive step up from the 3.6 ? as i might have to have a re think and wait for one of them

my car needs are just hauling a lot of stuff in comfort on motorways and the odd trip in the snow which the Q7 has done with aplomb so far so i dont need to worry about all roading so to speak....

the latter cars are quieter, and faster, it would be worth having a drive in one to see what you think. the difference back to back is quite noticeable but whether it is quieter and smoother than a q7 i can't say as I've never driven on, but the 4.4 was a pretty big step up from the 3.6 Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The 8 speed box makes such a difference to that on the 3.6.

Power delivery is very smooth and the levels of equipment are excellent. I always thought the Q7 cabin a bit sparse looking and of a lower finish to the RR but each to their own.

Well worth trying the 4.4 Thumbs Up 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

5.0 is a considerable step up in power over the 4.2 BUT... Still uses the 6sp gearbox which imho is woeful hence why the 4.4YDV8 gets such fab reviews!

The Derv models shortfalls over the silky 5.0 get negated by the refinement the 8sp box brings with it... Now please don’t all shout at me! Im just saying it as it is Rolling Eyes

As you see it perhaps Craig. You and I have always disagreed on this point, not much else but definitely this.

Yes the 4.4 TDV8 is a wonderful machine but the 5.0 S/C does not suit the 8 speed box without a differential ratio change. The L405 S/C is better but even that seems to never have any low down grunt. Petrol engines produce their torque much higher up the rev range and there's no getting away form that.

As I've said before, if you're happy to use low down torque all the time the 4.4 is the way to go. If, like me, you prefer to use the wider rev range and have a much crisper throttle the petrol is much better at that, but not if you gear it up so it's never in the power band.

My Merc E500 estate was the same. 7 speed - too many gears. Never in the right one when you want a swift overtake.

Yes, side by side the 8 speed is a more modern and all round better box, but the petrol really needs shorter final drive gearing which kind of defeats the object of having more gears.

To answer the O/P, the 2010MY onwards L322 is a very much updated car over the 06-09 models. If you're a diesel fan the 4.4 makes the older 3.6 look old and dated. If you prefer petrol the 5.0 (which I have now) is a huge leap forward over the 4.2. Better dash, better infotainment, better brakes, more comfy seats, and if you get the model with dynamic suspension it drives better too. It's much the same story with the 4.4d over the 3.6d, LCD dash, better brakes, better infotainment and more model choice. Petrol S/C was AB only I think whereas diesel gives you Vogue, VSE, AB Westminster etc.

Thanks, I guess with there not being many 5.0SC on the market at the moment theleaning is towards a 4.4, i am sure i will miss the 5.0SC; however i mostly do two 6 mile a day round trips then longer trips on the weekend.
So wasnt entirtly sure that a 4.4 diesel would should my mileage. 2011 5.0SC Santorini Black

New Zealand 2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Galway Green

I absolutely LOVE the 5.0 SC and thinks it is brilliant (L322 !!). I have never driven the TDV8s but I have developed a dislike for diesel over time and not just for the smell Smile.

IMHO the diesels are too susceptible to issues with turbos, EGRs etc. which has put me off. I don't have any hard data that proves that the diesels are less reliable than the petrols but my gut feeling from reading posts on this forum is that the diesels seem to have more and quite expensive issues while the petrols are virtually bulletproof (other than the potential for cam chain tensioner issues).

Case in point, when I was upgrading from my 4.2 SC I initially found a very nice looking TDV8 3.6 that ticked all the boxes but then found out one of the turbos had gone and was going to be replaced. That set of a lot of alarm bells for me and I cancelled the sale and continued searching till I found my current 5.0 SC and I have not regretted that for a split second.

It is such a brilliant car to drive and has been completely problem free (now of course the universe will smite me bad I'm afraid but hey it is the truth). I have been sold on petrol cars till I can get my full EV Range Rover Smile. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!
