Help Needed with A Friday Afternoon Range Rover

Hi All,

I really need your help and technical advice. I feel like I should start taking my own lubricant to the Range Rover dealer every time I visit as I am getting rather sore... (Details of visits here: http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic36850.html

I have had my 2011 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 TDV8 for about 1 year. In this time I have had no end of trouble with the DPF filter amongst other things.

Unfortunately I got in the RR and had a though "Its running well, I havent had anything break or alert for nearly 2 weeks now" big mistake because around the next corner the red "DPF FULL, Visit Dealer" alert came up and reduced engine power. I drove it straight to the dealer and told them its broken again. Luckily the service guy and the guy I bought it from were both there. The service guy booked it in and didnt even ask for the registration details or my name, kind of gives a hint as to how often they have it.

I received a phone call from the dealer today he proceeded to tell me that there were 58 attempts to clear the DPF filter with only 8 successful. He then tried to tell me that when the warning light comes on I need to drive a distance on the motorway at 60 to 70 mph to clear it. I pointed out that not once did I or my wife receive an warning. Literally driving fine for 5 minutes, then straight to red go to dealer.

I am not sure how I am supposed to sort this out, should I add a calendar appointment every week to drive on the motorway?!!?

Anyway my question is, is this even possible? should I always receive a warning? Does this "log" that the dealer can access show if a warning popped up, if it was ignored etc?

I hope someone can help!

Probably won't help you, but there was a guy on a forum that had a Jaguar X type, same problem in the end he had to get a refund for the car as over 6 months of going to and from the garage they just couldn't fix it!

Just a thought. There has been a lot of discussion about using 2 stroke oil as a fuel additive. Apparently it burns hotter than diesel and therefore helps the DPF among other benefits. Have a root round t'interweb and see what you think.

Ask your dealer if there are any unusual/unexplained engine codes ? The 4.4 TDV8 is prone to an EGR temp sensor in the LH (your drivers side) manifold giving up, this fills your DPF 10x quicker than usual... Rolling Eyes there is a P4040 type code associated with this fault sir Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the replies!

@Stacker - So I have told the dealer I want to get rid of the car. I am so disappointed with it to the point I dont even want to drive it anymore due to the fact I usually get stuck 100s of KM away from home in limp home mode. It cant be trusted and that makes me sad as it was supposed to be so much more.

@nicedayforit - So the dealer essentially refused to replace the DPF, first they said it was the way I was driving it, even he garage owner took me out to show me how to clear it. Turns out they replaced a clogged pipe? not sure what it was, but it was replaced and then they send the DPF off to be cleaned.

@steadyaway - Will take a look a round for the additive.

@Cam-Tech-Craig - Thanks for the info, I might try and get a print out of all the fault/diagnostic codes that were shown. I would have assumed that if this sensor was showing as faulty the dealer would have replaced it? Unless they are just trying to screw me and keep me coming back.

I can't help I'm afraid, but this sort of thing really makes my blood boil. The dealer has sold you an expensive car that doesn't work properly, why the hell aren't they bending over backwards to sort it out for you? This is, purely and simply, is crap customer service. Whoever they are or wherever they are they do not deserve to have a business. Drives:

If the DPF get past a certain stage it will not self clean and replacement or an off car specialist clean are the only options. As the dealer is doing no.2 hopefully this will fix it. No choice with these cars but to apply a bit of motorway throttle on a regular basis. Crying or Very sad

Hi All,

@rvbush - Yeah it really annoys me too, one of the most expensive cars I have ever bought and the most unreliable (my old rover 214si was better Very Happy ) I have got to the point I want to drive it into the dealer in limp home mode and drop the keys on the table and tell them to stick it, unfortunately my German isnt good enough to get my point across.

@wealy - So in Germany they have the same sort of saying, but its a "Monday Morning build" coming into the factory bleary eyed from the weekend.

@Gazellio @ Prestige Cars - if the DPF gets to the stage it can not clean surly it would show a warning that the DPF is getting full, not just straight to RED and go directly to dealer? Also if i fails to clean 50 out of 58 times again I would have thought there would have been a warning before error.
