Hi, I want to take 2 wheels off at once. I've only used the axle stands to take one at a time off until now. It's fine and stable jacking one wheel up, putting an axle stand under and removing the wheel but if I then jack up the other wheel, it looks like the axle stand supporting the opposite corner would then become unstable.

is it best just using them for one corner at a time or does anyone have any tips please?

First make sure they are decent sized axle stands, I would say at least 2 1/2 ton ones, if you can, jack the whole front or whole rear at the same time, either under the front of the engine cradle where the tow point is, or under the tow bar or the rear subframe, if you cant then jack one side to the lowest height possible, which is around 3" of air under the wheel, as you jack the other side the first side will drop somewhat, then just have faith and jack, ensure the wheels of the jack can move as you jack and the car should raise and pivot on the first stand rather than dragging the first stand...

Take it easy and it should be fine, I do it all the time.... obviously don't take the wheels of until it is fully jacked up and supported...  Pete

Don't recommend trying to jack up two opposite corners!

If you do need that, suggest you jack the whole car up. May need more axle stands or decent wood blocks (short sleepers etc)

As Pete, says......don't take any wheels off until everything is up and safe, I generally double up and have extra wood blocks underneath even though I have the axle stands in place. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

...at least the second guy is safe.... he's unwound all the cable off his extension reel, -you don't want to start a fire ...under the fuel tank... do you?

Thanks for the replies... Maybe my description but I did mean taking both wheels off the one axle at once as opposed to taking off the front and back wheels on the same side of the car. Won't be taking any wheels off this BH weekend though as the time has passed me by

Make sure the car is in Park and the Handbrake firmly applied and you have wheel chocks in use! I have some old driveway bricks i use as chocks as they haven't failed me yet and dig in quite well as i test by trying to drive over them in low box

Park should be a proviso as most FF's wont let you take the key out without it being in park either but the handbrakes arent the best in the world  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Draper Expert 6 tonne stands. The are one of the few Draper products I can recommend as I'm not a Draper fan, but these really are the bogs dollocks.

For the rear wheels I made a Heath Robinson spacer block to stick on my 3T low access workshop jack (from SGS) to fit between the exhausts onto the suggested jacking point on the rear cross member.

I'll snap a pic if it's any use?

For the front there is already a flat section on the cross member if you remove the plastic tray section on the front sub frame.

That way it's possible to lift the entire end of the car off the floor without too much effort (again, caveat being usual chocks, good ground, and decent jack, but you knew all that so sorry if excessively patronising!)


IIRC these jacking points are the ones mentioned in the WSM (and probably elsewhere in this thread)

sorry, rather a newbie question on this topic.

In order to jack from the front to get both front wheels off the ground at the same time, do i have to remove the plastic tray under the front (sub frame?)? i.e. i can't access the point that haylands mentions just by the jacking point without first removing the plastic.

i searched around with a torch tonight but i couldn't figure it out.

Mine currently is on two 3 tonne axle stands, (6 tonne total) whilst the upper arms are being replaced (the benefits of a son who's a mechanic) i'll take some photos in the morning, but they have been placed on the jacking points and lifted initially using a 3 tonne trolley jack. I'll do a set of how to do photos now! Tony
