Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Loire Blue

I tried some iPad based sat nav apps before going for a dedicated unit. Just didn't get the comfy feeling that the app based solution was as good as the dedicated option.

Yeah I agree with Stan that I prefer a good in car system with maps up to date (for a reasonable price and not highway robbery). I don't like sticking any aftermarket stuff in but clearly JLR don't give a hoot about charging ludicrous amounts for map updates AND not getting maps for most of the world (for example I can forget maps for the part of Asia that I live and travel in !!!).

It is probably my biggest "niggle" I have with JLR. I can live with their slightly outdated infotainment systems, no problem at all but this policy with maps and map updates really gets my goat every time I think and read about it.

And with the later models, putting an Android head unit in, is not an option either besides I don't want to lose my twin angle viewing screen.

So bottomline is either going for aftermarket units like TomTom and the likes or smartphones with Google Maps, Waze, Sygic, etc. or tablets with same. That gives you both online and offline navigation options with up to date maps for low cost. I mean Sygic with worldwide TomTom map coverage with lifetime map updates was around 69,90 Euro when I got it and it has a LOT more maps than JLR will ever have. And with data SIM allowances on pre-paid SIM cards becoming cheaper and cheaper (I had 50 GB on my pre-paid Vodafone in the UK over Xmas / NY trip for peanuts) the Google Maps/Waze and other online navigation apps are a better option. The only drawback is having the actual unit in the car, having to put it in and take it out but hey, for 200+ GBP upgrades I really don't mind doing that !!!! Even if I don't like it.

If just some smart software engineer can add an option to the original software that allows the screen to mirror a smartphone screen with full functionality then I would be a very happy camper. For that I may even pay 100+ GBP Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Is there no USB port on these ones at all or does it all get done thru the dealer tool?
Wonder if the BBS stuff allows this to happen outside of the dealer? The updates can be quite large as we know with the dual layer DVDs 😊 FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

If it's actually taking more than 30mins it can't be via USB and would be the OBD port id guess FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

On the later models the navigation update is apparently done using a USB stick. They can be bought straight from Navtec even if my info is correct.

It would be great if Gap would develop something that allows for the navigation to be updated. I asked BBS but they didn't seem keen.

A better option would be a full BT link to phone or tablet and then mirror the tablet or phone on the cars screen! That way the full phone functionalities could be used! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

The dealer said it takes two hours to update after they have purchased a licence and logged in.

They also said they are charging the correct fee based upon garage time and software. They couldn't understand how the other dealership is doing it for £100 less. He is investigating their charging structure for the update but even if they reduce the price it's still a chunk of cash for a few new roads. 2005 L322 Vogue Gold gone

^ The dealer I used quoted ½ an hour.....it took longer because the download failed near the end so had to be re-started. Still the same price. I do hope you didn't mention the other dealer by name.

That would ruffle a few feathers and likely mean they just up the price for everyone else. Although for half an hours work it's not bad money at all! I bet they already had the update downloaded and it's just the activation of it that requires login and then upload to the onboard hdd/car unit FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

The absolute ultimate solution has got to be a Bluetooth iid tool that links with a smartphone to give full display on the inbuilt screen. Not only would you know how to get from A to B, but you would be able to read the fault codes when you you break down on the way !!!.
I would buy one tomorrow.
