but does the coolant flow through the valve as well as the exhaust gas cooler?

Meaning, is the egr valve itself jacketed with cooling?

Just wondering, as I'll probably get the emulators so will be looking into bypassing the cooling flow through the cooler and valve itself (if it has cooling)

Just as a point of interest, in my line of work I've seen a few cases of corrosion caused by sulphuric acid. Basically water mixing with combustion products (sulphur present in the fuel). For example turbo charger in service water washing, soot blowing boilers and economisers etc. But this was mostly using Heavy Fuel.

Maybe the cause of egr cooler leaks are due to the cooling water being too cold (if not regulated by a thermostat) and condensing the exhaust/combustion products, forming sulphuric acid.

Pete I'd be looking in these two spots with an inspection camera to try isolate a coolant leak.







Removing a throttle body could maybe also give access to better view the thermo stat housing.

I'm back home and have looked at this issue a bit more. I topped up the coolant tank and took it for a run 1 1/2 hrs. When I got back it was down to the previous level but with coolant still pumping around the system.

Last night after it cooled down I topped up the tank again, turned off the AC and let it idle for about 15 min so it was running at normal operating temps. The level didn't move and no leaks on the ground.

I have ordered an inspection camera. ______________________________

If you take the engine cover off, and whilst kneeling on a bar stool, lean over the engine and look down the area around the oil filter, you may see the red crust of evaporated coolant.

I managed this way, but I'm 6'3"

Thanks. I looked in those three places as best I could with the torch. No sight of any coolant residue. I'll look again when I get a camera probe. ______________________________

The camera arrived today. I had a good look around both sides of the driver side intercooler hose at the manifold end, and behind the oil filter housing, and both EGRs (the inner side). I found nothing except a bit of oil residue between the oil filter and oil cooler (I think it's the oil cooler).

It was idling a bit rough tonight where as normally its very smooth. Also the exhaust smelt a bit strange but I could be oversensitive.

It still uses no coolant while idling. And no sign of coolant on the ground.

Any more ideas? ______________________________

Checked oil filler cap for condensation

Check dip stick oil level

Do you have access to a radiator pressure tester?

I'd resist driving till diagnosed

I was thinking of a way to see if egr cooler(s) potentially leaking.

Maybe take off the inlet pipe from egr to air inlet plenum. See if moisture is present in pipe or plenum.

Pipe is the one with the 'stocking' on.
