Advice: Swollen nut stuck on socket

So, I went to remove the alloys from the Discovery 3 today and found that some of the nuts have the dreaded swollen issue under the caps..

I tried to persevere and tapped the 22mm socket head onto the first one to get a grip, but, once the nut was off, I can't get the socket off the nut. Evil or Very Mad

I've tried grabbing it in the vice and getting a puller on it but there's not enough of a gap to get the legs in.

Anyone got any advice?

I also found that the air powered impact wrench I have is pants. Not sure if it's the Aldi compressor or the wrench itself from the same range.

Should I get a decent air wrench or, buy a cordless one, if so, any recommendations?

Had same problem when I needes to change wheels on my full fat. Found the solution to getting nut out of the socket was to put socket in the vice and then use a drift (or screwdriver if needed) inserted through the hole where the socket would fasten onto the drive and knock it out with a big hammer. Took a fair few hits to get it going then it pinged out.

I thought about getting an air gun for my compressor but was told that normal domestic 50 litre compressors would normally struggle to keep up thebpressure for sustained use of an air gun. I bought a mains electric one in the end which has been faultless to use although a bit on the heavy side if you are using it above your head in a pit. 2008 TDV8

Screw the wheel nut back on the car, then wiggle the socket up and down (with a long extension connected to the socket) then when you’ve removed the socket remove the wheel nut using a 23mm socket Thumbs Up

Aldi's air impact wrenches are pants straight ot of the box Big Cry Big Cry

Don't ask why but I ended up with both the impact gun and ratchet - both were truly Censored

In a fit of stupidity I put plenty of engine oil in through the air inlet and ran the impact wrench for several minutes and then repeated a few times. I became enthusiastic when it began to pick up speed and free-wheel better. Now it's fairly usable and has been on many occasions. Ok - so it's still doesn't match the Blue-Point but then I don't care about it getting lost / damaged / etc.

For the price of them I'd try a wee bit more before giving up - hope yours came with the impact sockets as well. I knew mine had improved when it "tin-opened" the 19mm impact socket undoing an Ifor wheel nut Rolling with laughter Back in a Defender!!

The other thing that helps performance is to use high flow fittings such as PCL XF or euro fittings as opposed to standard and use 10mm tube.

Personally, I like air and have a CP7749 - at 980Nm, it takes the most stubborn bolts out with ease (but you do need the air too; I have a pair of 2.5hp compressors that I can link together). Cordless ones are certainly growing in popularity though, and Makita, Snap-On and Milwaukee ones have all had favourable reviews on the D3 forum. Thumbs Up

I get mine out by putting the socket in a vice then use a punch to come in from behind through where the ratchet goes just make sure to try and hit around the edges otherwise you go straight through the nut L322 2008 vogue

They break, causing the outer part to spin freely and leaving you even more in the Censored than the others do, so it's recommended to swap them for standard nuts. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I've used an aldi Impact wrench for the last few years with no bother , it's the hose that's the problem you need a 10mm one as a 6mm one can't maintain pressure at the gun .
