Citroen / Peugoet Indy Cheshire? Kingpleb?

Possibly one for Kingpleb...

Citoren Synergie 2.0 HDI - 2001MY

Just test drove it the other day.

Thick black smoke under acceleration (around 3000rpm) (concealed a car behind me on Motorway slip road).

Rest of car fine - starts ok hot and cold, driveable round town. Does feel under-powered.

Seller says if you push it to 3500rpm sometime engine light comes on, and then seems to work without the turbo - I guess it drops to a limp home mode. He has a ODB reset device which clears fault and car returns to normal.

I am guessing / hoping just a hose issue, or a sensor.

He also says when very very cold in winter it sometimes has trouble starting.

Any ideas - and recommend a good Indy citroen specialist aroudn Sandbach J17 M6? Howard

Hello there Smile

What fault is he claiming its clearing?

It sounds like its the HDi110 engine but if its the 2.2HDi engine it will be painful in the wallet Sad

I have the correct PSA Dealer tool if you wanted to whizz it by sometime but if it continuously smokes under hard booting its not a happy bunny. A lot of used ones can smoke when you drive them hard for a few miles as they have been gently driven around and the exhausts fill with soot very easily which also isnt good for them as they like to get very hot every now and again to flush the crud as it were.

There is a good indy called Paris Autos who I know very well and get all my jobs that i cant or wont do on my PSA vehicles, but they are in stockport as im not aware of anywhere good down south until you get to brum Sad

For cold starting it just sounds like the glowplugs have probably never been changed and its just got one or two left working which isnt much of a problem above 5'c FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Many thanks for your quick reply and offer to read fault code. When I have the vehicle that would be very welcome. Smile

I get the impression his tool simply cleared faults rather than actual fault code read out.

It is not 2.2, but 1997cc 2.0 HDI which I think is the 110 engine. Same as was used in Peugoet 806 and Fiat Ulysse (Euro Van / Bus etc)

Thanks for the recommend of Paris Autos - that is the 2nd thumbs up I have had for them.

It is odd - I have never been much a a francophile for my cars, but recently I am starting to really be drawn to the design of Peugoet and Citroens. Howard

Ask for Paul and say Will sent you Smile

Paul, Max and Brian are real old school and have been doing psa stuff for longer than I've been alive Very Happy
The HDi110 engine is one of the best old units out there so in surprised it's smoking , maybe it needs a dam good service and a thrash to clear it out but a fault code read may indicate a maf issue or such that would be worth checking.
They are used across all the mid and up PSA vehicles between 98-2005 when they went to 16v units. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Hi Andy

Many thanks for replying.

Thanks for the vote for Kevin - yes they are still there - I was just waiting for a thumbs up from somebody else that might have used them as I know nothing about them.

Will also check if anyone around Audley (on right from which direction?) Howard

Right - got the Synergie on my drive now.

Runs round ok - perhaps a good fast run out will help as suggested by KP

Any suggestions for additives to perhaps help clean it out (Injectors / EGR). Not having owned Diesel , let alone French car, I am not stoo sure if these Redex type things are worth it or do more harm than good.

It is 2.0 HDI 8 valve engine.

Thanks for sugestions. Howard

Get it warm and just thrash it hard for a little bit. Service it then give it another thrashing.

The only other real way to clean stuff out is to start taking it off the car to wash it through with brake cleaner or petrol and its very messy indeed. The intercoolers are quite a decent size as well and the pipework which will all be gungey once you get started. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Hi just a heads up on the Citroen garage that's been mentioned in Audley. I was in Audley this eve, the garage has gone . It was called chevron garage ? I think . Not sure if they 've moved or gone out of business.Kevin Odlum still going but obviously main dealer.

Kingpleb - many thanks for the advice - thrash / service / thrash - it is a bit different to RR ownership so that made me laugh. As it sounds a bit messy and I am short on time I shall follow the simplest route for now.

Any good forum recommendation for this vehicle - saw the Citroen Owners one - looked a bit quiet, the FrenchCarForum looks busier.

And ... is there a RAVE type manual for download - could find one in French .

Andy & LROMAD - many thanks for the advice on dealership - appreciated. I think the owner has set up Chesterton near Newcastle-U-Lyme when I read through a website from what I guess was the old garage. - owner Richard somebody... seems to be in to 2CVs etc Howard

Just for others who may be looking for a Citroen guy - just been down to Kevin Odlum's garage.

Appears to be exactly what I was looking for - ie. a man of years of experience who has sold and worked on these vehicles since when they were new, rather than some kids looking at the computer fault reader and changing parts because computer says so.

Will get it booked in and report back with my experience.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

KingPleb - gave it a good thrashing - definetly is making it run better now, but still some issues which Odlum's need to look at for me.

In the meantime as we all like photos - here are a few photos of the machine. Purchased really as a load lugger and hope to convert to a micro camper van as it has plenty of room!
