Hi guys as per the title my 2004 ffrr that I have owned for over 2 years makes a vibration sound under acceleration. It doesn't always make the sound but when it does it tends to be between 50 - 65mph, after that it's silent and smooth again. I have also noticed that if I take my foot off the accelerator while it's making the noise that the vibration stops instantly.

Does anyone have any idea what is likely the cause of this and what I would need to do to put it right? It's been doing this to over a year at least and doesn't seem to have gotten any worse or noisier. Everything else on the car works perfectly.

I'm based in warwickshire can anyone recommend a honest and competent specialist to do any work required?

Torque converter on its way out?

Hi thanks for the replies, if it's the Torque Converter what is the implication of not changing it till it fails completely - will that mean it damages the gearbox or will it just mean the torque converter needs replacement? That noise is caused by the lockup clutch failing when it's trying to engage to lock the input shaft to the TC and breaking up. I had the same thing a couple of years ago, should be around £700 for a new TC and fitting. I decided to have the gearbox refurbished at the same time as they had to take it out anyway to fit the TC so was round £1200-1300 from what I can remember. Took about 4 or 5 days to get it done.

Leaving it is one of those things, you know it's broken but it's really how far you want to push a faulty part with the possibility of when it does finally give up what else it takes with it and how stranded it will leave you. I would recommend getting it done as soon as possible.

If the TC is starting to fail it will be burning/breaking up the lockup clutch lining.

The addition of the bits of clutch to the transmission fluid will eventually cause excessive wear in the gearbox and take that out too.

I'm surprised that it has already lasted a year like this...

A specialist can strip the TC and replace the clutch rather than simply replace the TC.

All transmission fluid will need to be changed as well
