Hi Folks,

Anyone here driven to Amboseli NP? I'm planning a trip from Kampala, just under 1000ks.

There are two main entrances coming from the Nairobi direction, one is longer "öff road" than the other so just wondered which is best?

Looking to do this in the dry season.

Best is to take the road towards Namanga and enter from that side. Avoid Mombasa road.

Have you been there and what are the tracks into the park like condition wise?

Graded murram. Corrugations depend on how recently the road was graded.

If you go in through namanga you drive through the empty lake bed which is very nice (in the dry season)

One thing I cant make out is the distance between the entrance to the park and the lodge you suggested?

It's about 30km drive from Namanga gate. It's on the southern border of the park.

There are 2 hotels in the centre of the park (Ol Tukai and Serena) but they're more commercial, resort like though they have great views of the animals from within the hotel grounds. Tortilis is more bushy but animals come to the nearby waterhole at night.

Other hotels are outside the park on the kimana side but you have to go through the gate to get in/out of the park which takes time and that side of the park is less interesting. 2004 L322 V8

Hi there,

Been a few times, most recently a couple of years ago. We actually took the Mombasa Road route which, after the branch off, was smooth tarmac all the way - we were there in 2.5Hrs! Not sure if the road is still as good though.

Namanga route is much longer and if I recall, there is a pretty long stretch of murram/corrugations before you get to the park itself.

We stayed at Amboseli Sopa - which was very nice! Amboseli Serena good too and a little more upmarket. Or you could go luxury with Tortillis Camp (the owners are good friends of mine).

Interestingly the map shows that road not sealed, but I guess it depends on when this map was last updated. Best thing to do is contact one of the lodges on that route and ask!

I was looking at the Serena, they have a good reputation.

emali-loitokitok is perfect tarmac, but you still have to put up with the horror of mombasa road before that.

If going to Namanga, better to go via athi river than isinya - the road to isinya is bad. Athi River-Namanga is also good tarmac.
