engine starts only with gear in neutral position ?

hi everyone
i am a new (proud ) owner of a RR 2003 V8 4.3 and since it is my first one, i am not familiar with it
As safe transfer mode warning was coming up repeatedly,
I had my inactive transfer box fixed up recently in a garage ( they did not exchange the unit though)

Since the transfer box was fixed, I have been facing trouble starting the engine, as follows :
1-engine won't start with gear in P position, and Safe transfer mode warning will appear at each attempt.
2-engine will start with gear in N position, but still the "Safe transfer mode " warning will appear occasionally.

honestly i dont mind repeating attempts to start, but i feel uncomfortable as i wouldnot like to be stuck somewhere without being able to start the engine at all. Thumbs Up

thank you for your kind help

Welcome aboard!

Sounds like your Park Selector is not fully home, this could be an issue with the selector rod between the gear lever and the gearbox. Unless well greased these can seize up and cause problems. on the RHS of the vehicle in line with the passenger door (in your case assuming you have a LHD).

or, the microswitches for the gear lever are worn out. Centre console covers off for this one

The other problem you can get is the locking pin for the Park selector, don't think this would affect starting. .

thanks for your help.
can you please as well help me on this
once the engine is running, having started with lever in N, the green light indicator on the dash board would eventually switch off when i move the lever from N to D and the "Trans failsafe mode" warning would come up.
this happens about 50% of the times i start the engine .
would that be caused by the same issue ?
thanks for help

There are a thousand things that could cause "Trans Failsafe Mode" but yours is clearly related to the gearshift!

Probably best thing to do is get the codes read to find out exactly what is causing it, then you can fix it Thumbs Up .

It would be worth checking the alignment of the shift cable. If the selector position doesn't match what the the transmission is seeing it could cause many of these faults.

Put the shift lever in park, get underneath, loosen the cable and make sure the trans is in park, then re-tighten.

This photo is from a BMW, but shows the adjustment well:

+1 ^ The shift cable is out of adjustment at the gearbox end and lubricate.

I have had similar on a non-RR.

Check that nothing is stopping the lever moving fully forwards into Park.

On a Ford, I had similar where the indicator showed Park, but the lever was being obstructed by some scrunched up paper at the front of the selector gate.

It "inhibits" you or stops you from starting the vehicle in gear on an automatic gearbox. If you look underneath the vehicle at the gearbox you will see it and how exposed it is to the elements.Mine just went bad after approx 6-7 years and I have put a second one in .Its not too bad of a job and you can see the instructions in the online manuals in the wiki
