Bentayga - LR have a problem

I have a Bentayga for the weekend on extended test drive.

We have never driven a vehicle like it. It drives in a way that I never thought could be better than a Range Rover. The power delivery is effortless, it's the fastest 4x4 in the world, its cabin is sublime and so well put together, the infotainment is fantastic (first time I've used Apple CarPlay) and it has the full suite of off road capability!

Rear legroom and boot space is better too.

I think LR really need to up their game. Yes it's more expensive, but it's in some way so justified.

Only problem - image of driving a Bentley vs Range Rover...

It looks horrible and that would be the one reason people with taste won't buy it.

I do agree with the need for JLR to improve their game in view of this competition !!!

To be fair to JLR, from Classic to L405 there has been a lot of improvement but when items such as infotainment, quality and reliability are not that great still, there is need for improvement. JLR has come far but they still have some catching up to do on a few fronts if the Range Rover wants to be at the top of the game in every aspect. I feel that the Range Rover should be on the same or very close to comfort and ride quality as a Bentayga and interior it should be pretty close as well. Reputation and good design only go so far these days.

We also shouldn't forget that the competition of JLR is also not without issues. The "Germans" and "Japanese" have also shown that they can't always stay ahead of the pack on reliability and quality in the pursuit of cost cutting to remain competitive (I expect that being the main reason). I think the gap between JLR and the rest is shrinking but it shouldn't be there in the first place and the target should be to be in the top 3 reliable/quality wise to match the rest of the cars.

As for the Bentayga, I'd take a L322 or L405 5.0 SC of any Bentley any time Smile (well unless I can sell the Bentley and buy a L322 and L405 5.0 SC with the money of course Twisted Evil ) MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

It looks like a Bentley - and to some people, that's a good look......

The Cayenne looks like a Porsche, the X5 looks like a BMW etc.

That's a nice looking car. Doubt it will present LR with a problem though, emphasis on the word niche and the significantly higher pricing compared with RR.

As the man said "... up to half a dozen expensive car brands are rushing to create new SUVs for the niche they believe is opening above the most expensive Range Rover."

It looks so much better in the flesh. It does have Bentley styling cues. We have a GTC V8S and it is very similar in terms of design, creases, bulges etc.

I cannot describe how incredible it is to drive or be driven in.

There is absolutely no way I would recommend anyone paying the same price for an SVAutobiography!

Trouble is its based on the VW and Audi Q7 floor pan and thats not a good start, the looks are not great. However in black in the dark i am sure it looks fine.

Wait and see how many premier league footballers buy them. Then ask yourself if you'd still buy one (if you could).

It damn well should be good, have you seen the price? Then you start on the options list, most will be over £200k. Drives:

2010 FFRR TdV8 Vogue SE - Zermatt Silver

I haven't driven one, but I have looked at one in the local showroom. It looks a LOT better in real life than the pictures suggest, especially in dark colours. The quality of the interior finish is high. All of the first year's production has been sold, so it looks like it will be a successful product and I expect JLR will feel a draught, as the top end RRs presumably offer high margins.

The one I looked at was about £220,000. My main conclusion was that it made the 405 SC look good value. I also wondered whether the B would attract more envy and hostility than the much more familiar RR. Only Range Rovers since 1988
