I can't vouch for up to date models, as mine is one of the oldest models being 2002. But I have almost always driven decent large cars, and done all my own repairs and servicing. I wondered if the l332 was going to take me into the unknown area of sensors, codes, laptops, and such technology, that would renders my collection of greasy hammers and similar old fashioned tools to rest.
. I bought myself a non runner (timing chain fault) v8 and opened her up, performed surgery, and had her running sweetly, and apart form some gearbox issues, have had only typical faults, like water leaks, and flat battery and some easy to understand issues to deal with. I very happy driving it, and recommend the car to anyone who has a toolbox, and understands how to run a car, in that if you have a small problem, you address it, not hope it will just go away.
Newer models are slightly different, and diesels are not my cup of tea. But laughs aside, to drive, even an old one is bliss, and luxurious. To me the car is as versatile, to use, as well as just a large car. I can tow, fill it up with rubbish, or materials, and wash it out, and go out for a night into town, all dressed up. These are at home parked outside Claridges, tossing the key to a valet, as they are on a farm, or construction site. They (to me) don't get looked down at, like some poser mobile, or boy racer car. They are indeed the best all rounder.
With forums like this one, all issues can be understood, and a course of action in the right direction, should get you back on track. As with all modern cars, they all use similar technology nowadays, so you can't really avoid the modern technology.

In full agreement with what you said.
After all, it is a mechanical item and contains many electrical units.
Even without an understanding of how ecu's are coded and the can-bus system workings, provided you have a basic mechanical and electrical aptitude, they are no harder to work on than your average euro box.

Obviously if you have a fairly new one you should be trouble free but like me with a 12 year old model it can be an emotional rollercoaster.There is no doubt it is a very luxurious feeling motor and am often asked what I would buy next,but its a struggle to think I would have to step backwards to an ordinary car.I must admit however my last car was a 6 year old Vectra which I had for 6 years and by far my best car for the least I spent on maintenance.Literally brake pads and oil,amazing yet the Full fat by far the most unreliable but like the guy said above once you start to understand a few things and my mate with his laptop have hopefully got the gremlins in the bin .
