Plate numbers and age.

It is time for me to ask for your help and explain something to me. I see a lot of talk about a 59 plate or 65 plate etc and it is clearly linked to the age of the vehicle but can someone please tell me how to link the plate to the age? My plate has a 10 in it and is a 2010 model year and also built and registered in 2010. So that could make sense but what about a list of plate numbers and age and which number on the plate is the one.

Just out of interest Embarassed Wink MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Well this is my understanding......

In Britain, we have two dates in the year when the reg plats change, 1 March and 1 September. This has been running since the prefix year identifiers ran out on Y in 2001. So a car registered on 1 Sept 2001 got a 51 plate. The next change was to 02 in March 2002, and so on. The year marker, eg 16, runs from March to Sept and the second marker, which started with a 5 and is now a 6, runs from Sept.

So depending on when manufacturers run their model years will determine what plate a particular model year has. My car is a 2010 on a 10. But a similarly specced car could be 2010 on 59.

Confusing, and I'm sure others better versed in the details could make better job of explaining!

It's very confusing - a 2016 car could be on 65, 16 or 66 plate depending on when it is registered.

In general we think of adding 50 - so a 16 plate is first half and 66 plate will be second half but as Andy points out, the dates are off so technically there are 3 different numbers available for any given year.

I actually looked all of this up just a few weeks ago, as I was curious. He didn't even mention the region codes. Whistle

The first Uk Land Rover magazine I looked at had confusing classifieds. I remember wondering why the age of the car was quoted as "M reg" instead of a year. But the old letter prefix/suffix thing was a LOT easier. Evil or Very Mad

Over here, the plates go with the owner, not the car. So the actual registration has no significance. People usually only swap to a newer plate of the old old is getting rather tatty. And the numbers are NOT in sequence anyway.

Why is it done like this?

Can someone post an example pic?

Our number plates are just issued in sequence, the number depending on the style. For examples, see https://www.myplates.com.au/#/home

Often, dealers will have a batch of plates on hand ready to fit to a new car when they sell it.

Plates stay with the vehicle unless the owner transfers them to another car. However, if a car's registration is allowed to lapse, then the plate is supposed to be handed back in to the authorities and is not reissued (unless a personalised plate). If the police come across an unregistered car, they will remove the plates. Ron B. VK2OTC

England 2006 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Cairns Blue

I wrote this some years ago, just after the current system came in. I also have details of the prefices and suffices years, and the old style area letters, but too big to put in here...

"A new format for registration marks was introduced from 1 September
2001.   The new system was introduced because:

   * With the end of the "Y" registration prefix on 31 August 2001, the
current system will run out of acceptable combinations.
   * Combined with new rules governing their display, number plates will
become clearer and easier to remember.

The new registration marks will all be made up of seven characters.  There
are three parts to the registration mark, each with a separate meaning.

   * The first two letters show where the vehicle was registered, the local
     memory tag.
   * The two numbers indicate the age of the vehicle, the age identifier.
   * The last three letters give a unique identity to a vehicle, the random
     letters.

Local memory tags will help with the recall of number plates and the identification of vehicles.

   * The first letter represents the region.
   * The second letter relates to a DVLA Local Office.

Therefore in AB51 ABC: "AB" shows that the vehicle was first registered in
Anglia (A) at the Peterborough office (B).

Age identifiers will continue to change twice yearly in March and September.
In the example above "51" represents the 6 month period from September 2001
to February 2002.

The three final letters will provide a random element to make each
registration mark unique.

Letters "I" and "Q" are to be excluded along with letter combinations that
may be considered offensive. The letter "Z" will be acceptable in this
element of the number plate." Best Cheers

Frank

Hello Frank, it's been a long time since we corresponded. Thanks for the info.

I guess the UK's method of having 2 letters to ID the location of first registration is similar to our State markings but I don't really understand why one would want a year identifier.

I see you also have a V8 petrol in Adriatic Blue as do I - I sold the P38A in December. Ron B. VK2OTC

Hi Ron, it is nice to hear (read) from you, it HAS been a while.
Registration year has always been important to UK governments and drivers, that's why they have messed around with the date change a few times. ISTR reading that 70 per cent of new car registrations took place in January when that was the year change... they then moved it to August and the same sort of thing happened.
I remember my mother would go to the car dealer in the middle of the night, to pick up her new car - with the new year registration plate - at a few minutes past midnight, and she wasn't the only one there either.

My P38 has gone as well. My L322 is Cairns Blue. Best Cheers

Aha! Thanks for that Frank.

Frank, change your year model and you'll see all the colours. Select Cairns Blue.

Now change the year number back again to 2005. You'll be able to select Cairns Blue. Ron B. VK2OTC
