I seem to have a very slow coolant leak, there is no puddle to be seen under the car and to top up requires only a cupful of coolant per month. The car is running fine - should I panic or just keep topping up?

On another point a guy asked me how I found my Range Rover, I said too many visits to the garage, he said "unreliable then?" I said I meant filling station as the car is a 5.0L Petrol. Unreliable!! - as if  Geoff

I had one of those - turned out to be a head gasket

On a TDV8 that was an engine out job

Hopefully it's just a leaking hose

Does it put the low coolant warning on or is it just low when you check it, mine likes to run low, it never has much in the expansion tank but the level seems to just stay there...low.... If I top it up it just drops again after a while, back to where it likes to be....  Pete

Could be a hose weeping somewhere and evaporating off the engine. It's seems unlikely to be the head gasket if you have no other symptoms.

Have a check of all the smaller hoses and pipes coming off the main hoses, as they could have chaffed through somewhere.

Also don't forget the expansion level is very dependant on engine and ambient temperature. Look at it on a cold day with a cold engine and you will find its a bit lower than on a warm day with a cold engine. Also a war engine will put up the level somewhat too.

I would compare apples with apples, always check the level in the morning before the car is started  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The light came on once a couple of months ago and I topped it up. I have run it without any problem since then (no light) but I noticed it needed topping up when cold this morning (no light but it had just dropped below the marked level) so I did - less than a pint.

I'll have a look at hoses etc in the morning.

Mine (petrol) is leaking at the seam in the header tank. I have a new tank on order.

I only found the leak by accident. I was cleaning the engine bay and saw a white line of dried coolant down the RH rear corner of the tank. Ron B. VK2OTC

i know there is another thread on coolant leaking from a TDV8 but mines a petrol. There is nothing on the drive or under the car that I can see but I think maybe the leak is getting worse - took a pint this morning to get level up to cold fill mark.
The car seems to run fine with no issues, anyone got any simple things I should try/look at or had/have a similar problem? Geoff

I suggest you take a good look when the engine is running and warmed up, have a torch handy too. Its a good way to spot coolant deposits in the hidden away areas.

You could fine a tell tale sign this way. Too small a leak to show up once things have cooled down.

Bit of a pain but if you have that under tray thingy under the engine take that off and crawl under with the torch and see if you can spot anything there.

Also worth checking the bleed valves (admittedly my only experience is on the TD6) but one of mine was blowing hidden away under the engine covers. Sealed it up with hylomars and a new rubber washer and have been good to go since. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember
