Engine oil leak- warranty claimable or normal wear and tear?

A not so hypothetical question sadly....

Should a Landrover Extended Warranty cover oil leaks from the engine ? or will they class it as normal wear and tear? (car has done 45k miles and is 4 year old.)

It doesn't specifically exclude it in the policy booklet, and arguably it is a mechanical failure of a seal

I recall that the select warranty doesn't cover oil leaks, but I have just had a look in the full approved policy book I have and it doesn't exclude Oil leaks and it does in the old CCP/select book I have. So if they are saying no then I would argue the point.

Where is it leaking from? If it is the failure of a specific part IE the oil cooler then it should be covered.

Get them to show you where its excluded from the policy! its not as far as i can see and it says it covers all mechanical failure..... with exclusions. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

thanks for the info - I checked the booklet too - but it was just the clause about...."any normal wear and tear" as it perhaps "could" be argued if a gasket or seal had gone - then it could be wear and tear as no gasket or seal lasts forever. but yes if say something like the oil cooler had cracked then I most certainly would expect that to be covered.

hopefully both scenarios are covered - LR assist are coming this morning to have a look.

interestingly they class wear to the steering components as wear and tear..... so I would assume Track rod ends etc would not be covered.

How did you get on with LR assist? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I have just had a crank case oil seal done under the Landrover extended approved warranty, quite a involved job apparently, I had only owned the car for 5 weeks and it was noticed when in for a new door module ( again under warranty), the module was done at stonelake Of Halifax and at the same time he noticed the leak, they said to take it back to guy salmons (the selling dealer) for the oil leak and let them work it out, by that he said the leak looks old and should of been noticed before the sale, so the warranty company may only pay for some of it if any, and may insist to see it partially stripped down before a decision is made, stonelake also said get them to do the pre tensioner at the same time it's noisy, they were correct about them wanting to see it stripped, and that held them up a couple of days waiting for them to come out, according to guy salmons they paid, tensioner,s as well, but whether a deal was made I suppose I'll never know, as technically it would of been guy salmons problem to sort regardless, it will be going back to stonelake to be checked in the next week or so( as I don't trust main dealers work ) only people I trust is stonelake, they could of done the job even under warranty had it not been for the possibility that it could of been sold like that, so if they've paid for mine I can't see it been a problem for you thanks Berty

Well. Lr assist chap thought it might be leaking from drive shaft off side but local stealership have now got the car and they say it is a leaking steering rack... which will need replacing. Seems excessive to me to replace the whole steering rack for the sake of a seal but i guess its pretty high pressure in there. They are contacting warranty dept in the morning for authorisation but feel there should be no issue.

On the plus side they have given me a 6 month old L405 vogue se to play with while mines in the shop. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
Very nice but i have to say not the quantum leap i always thought it would be from my l322 Confused

I said no to a l405 and asked for a basic spec disco, just because i wanted my own to feel special on its return, and a loaner l405 could of spoilt that, Laughing
