Painting Headlights

Took the plunge this weekend and painted the Super's headlights black. Thought I'd add some notes here in case anyone else is thinking of doing it themselves.

1) It's much easier than you might think so don't be afraid to give it a go. daveo's instructions on how to dismantle the 06-09 headlight in the Wiki take you through most of what you need to know.

2) Taking the headlights out is a piece of cake - just two screws at the top and one at the bottom and then pull out the wiring connector.

2) If putting your lights in the oven or using a heat gun puts you off, just use a hair dryer. With 2-3 minutes of warming with the hairdryer the sealant separates easily.

3) If you plan to keep the chrome surrounds around the lights DONT use masking tape. I masked them off before spraying and when I took off the masking tape it pulled off bits of chrome which then had to be touched up with chrome paint. Has anyone figured out how to do it without masking tape?

4) Put down plenty of extra news paper around where you are spraying as the overspray may go further than you expect. I had a few frantic moments with the white spirit - and luckily Mrs Ridge Rover didn't notice!!

6) Warm up the sealant on both the body of the headlight and the lens before you try to put them together again, it will make it much easier.

Here's the finished product:

Put two Rhodeasian Ridgebacks in a Range Rover and pretty soon it's their Ridge Rover.

You can buy low tack masking tape or just pull off a length then wipe the sticky site across your trousers until the tack is reduced....

You can also paint the bit you don't want covered in grease, wait till the paint dries properly and wipe it off....

Or buy some plasti-dip brush on and use that as masking tape, it peals of easily afterwards.... Pete

You can’t even touch the chrome inside as the salt contained within the sweat in your fingerprints will tarnish it! Shocked

We have always hand painted them negating the need to mask them Thumbs Up
