A very small difference between the two in real world terms... Ive owned both and have traveled many thousands of miles in them... So speak from experience...

I'm not too bothered about speed of my SC, I have the 911 for that

What I really appreciate in the 4.2 is the quietness and wafting along , particularly with very little throttle
It's a lovely place to be , and really appreciate the quiet engine.

My mate has the diesel and you can't get away from the noise.

I only did 3k miles last year, so no brainer for us Alcohol and eBay is never a good mix

To me, the performance figures alone were low on the deciding factors. It came more down to the type of driving I was likely going to be doing, which had realistically a high proportion of short trips of less than 5 miles. My experience from my 3.0 bmw diesel was that the engine barely gets warm, and that transferring that over to the 3.6tdv8 would mean running it in the conditions which everyone seems to say is not great for it. Combine that with petrol engines warming far quicker, I figured the SC would be better for me, in that area.

Then there is issues I mentioned before about *possible* Diesel engine component failures / replacements. Reading posts here suggests that should they occur ( which given my short journeys I may increase the probability of them ) then it's bills running easily towards £1k mark. With the probabilities of issues being lower with the SC, the bill money could go towards fuel instead, and keep me on the road. ... That being said, the fuel bill runs up quick at 14 to the gallon !

They are different beasts in terms of driving. Whilst the SC is very keen and instant response, I also very much like the press-pause-surge response of the big diesel engines.

If I was doing a lot more longer journeys, then I think my choice would be different and it would be the tdv8. So it's worth really thinking about how you are going to use it more than whether on paper it gets to 60 quicker. V8 or else ...

Thanks All for the comments, it certainly seems to have prompted some debate......... Definately leaning towards the SC at the minute - seems I can potentially get a younger, lower mileage for similar or less money. Just need to decide now if its a pre facelift with the better seats (imho) or a newer one.

I bought a s/c two and a half years ago and have done over 50 k miles in it had to replace two front lower arms - one had gone but thought replace in pairs also replaced rear bushes and rear lower wishbones and still has no faults brilliant vehicle but then I still have my old classic and my p38

First big run since I picked up my TDV8 last Monday, Cardiff and back , a total of 380 miles.
On the journey down, trip showed a steady 35.6 mpg at 65 to 70, on way back this fell to 32.4 for some reason...uphill perhaps !!

I did a little journey from evesham to windsor in the ff and the trip showed 10.8 mpg bloody strong headwind that day

I drive the 4.4TDV8... On a long run I usually get between 32-33mpg. I love it! In fact those figures match my wife's JCW Countryman! I can't shout loud enough about my FFRR... Best drive I've owned!
