Drop the socket down on the plug without the extension bar and through the hole where the extension bar goes, determine how deep it is going onto the plug. Compare that to one of the good plugs that you removed. If its going down same distance then you need a tighter socket on it to grip it.

Having looked at this for the third time, I think what you need is something like some uber uber long needle nose pliers, or perhaps a very small right angled pointed pick with a long handle.

That's exactly what I was thinking, that is the aluminium spacer from one of the two bolts on the plastic cover in which case I would spray some brake cleaner on it and put a small amount of araldite on the end of a socket and try and glue the socket to it. Either that or maybe one of the washers from under the cam cover bolts

The oil leak mentioned is not head gasket but cam cover gasket.most likely

My money is it was one of the stepped waters from the rocker cover. And he got it off with a magnet, or some long nosed pliers. Changed the plug, and has been out driving and enjoying himself so much, he forgot to follow the thread, and put us out of our misery.

he can't have driven it like it before, it must have been waiting to fall perfectly, as he took off the coil pack.

Nope haven't tried, the only top of the spark plug visible is the ceramic part and the metal head... I'm afraid of breaking it... 2002 L322 V8

You could try a ring magnet if its steel if you can find one that is the right internal and external size but make sure you have something connected to the magnet else that might get stuck down there also, if not put some araldite around the end of the spark plug socket after degreasing the bore and socket and glue whatever it is to the end of the socket but make sure you dont use too much and glue it to the spark plug. if it wont shift the glue will break off leaving whatever it is behind providing you can pull on the socket.

Have you tried one of those grabbing tools you see in accessory shops? A sort or bendy stick, with four talons, up a tube, you push on the thumb button, and four claws come out, and gently released, grab the object you want to acquire.
Just search for claw pick up tool
You can also magnetise a deep socket by repeatedly stroking in long circular strokes over and old speaker magnet.
