Hello All

When I was shopping for an L405 (which i should hopefully collect next week), I also tried to consider as many other makes/models as possible before going ahead.

I couldn't however (personally) think of anything else that came close, but thats very possibly due to my lack of imagination.

Therefore, just curious what others have or would consider as an alternative to an L405 in the luxury car market, for a similar (ish) price

It's tricky realy , Porsche Cayenne is a quality product but a very different beast , Mercedes GL or whatever they are calling it this week is a bit too "barmaids blouse " and the ML is the same but too small , BMW X5 is class below and the X6 is a disgrace ,Audi Q7 is hopeless and surprisingly small inside and the Bentley Buyanga thing is ugly and expensive without offering much more than a 405 . All my personal opinion of course  2008 MY Supercharged

Your opinion pretty much sums it up for me as well (most of it I agree with)

I did love the driving dynamics of the Cayenne but it is a different beast offering a totally different experience....

Therefore I couldn't think of anything else to compare to the Range Rover when shopping....

Here's hoping it lives up to my expectations when I collect .....

I've had a couple of VW Toureg's previously. Wife's interested in a Jeep. None of these in the same league as L405. I can only think of the RRS as close currently. Otherwise we're away from the 4x4's and into S Class/ 7 Series or Bentley's for equivalent comfort. Just my thoughts.

Yes I did look at the S Class and 7 series when looking

Didn't go S Class as my father recently bought one and didn't want the same car as him, and no to 7 Series for me as I've had many BMW's and they don't feel Special to me anymore (maybe that's just me tho)

Bentleys on the other hand I don't know much about, but may consider one, one day, once I've researched them more

I looked at the Porsche Cayenne 8yrs ago when considering an L322 and went for the L322 , so when moving on last year, the only logical choice was the L405 this time around, I didn't consider any other 4x4. Steve

New Disco 5 in a few months time.

Not long after buying our L322, I raised this very question with my wife; this is magnificent but what could we ever replace it with?

We came to the conclusion that aside from Bentleys, Rolls-Royces and maybe an S-Class (although we have huge downer on MB and intend never to buy another), there just wasn't anything in the same league comfort wise as a FFRR and certainly not in 4x4 guise…….I am deliberately ignoring that Bentley 'thing'.

At least we have the option of 'going up a rung' by going to the L405 when we change the L322. In the meantime, we waft along quite happily knowing that we have the best in the field, namely a FFRR.

Therefor, the replacement for an L405 would be……..a 405 with higher spec and larger engine. Simple.

A late model 2012 L322 Autobiography with all the toys was the best ever FFRR, and unless you have money to burn is much better value than an L405 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

Buy a 2012MY and spend the £30-£40k difference on something else that will interest you

Too late for an L322 😅....

I guess there's not much else out there besides an L322/L405 that fits the bill for a luxury cruiser with a big boot.....

I don't like them, but a Mercedes GLS must be the nearest rival. They're supposed to be very refined since GL turned into GLS.

Still haven't warmed to the GLS..... In time perhaps....

I'd have the Porsche as a sensible alternative and if BMW made the 5 Series GT with a decent engine & X-Drive combination that too is a candidate.

MB = poo. Plus the dealers are worse than LR dealers (If that's possible). I've had 3 and all were problematic.
The last decent Audi was the original Quattro. Nothing since has been either comfortable or well made.
The new RR Sport is way too small inside. Impossible to fasten the seat belt without shuffling my lardy ar5e from side to side.

L405 is all there is to replace my L322 when the time comes.
