Can't jump start

Hi All

Had the first starting problem since I did the alternator and the battery 2 years ago. I had similar problems 2 years ago as I did today. Car will not jump start.

2 years ago when I last had starting problem, tried to jump from a diesel shogun and a 4l Jeep, neither would jump start the RR, but 30 minute charge from battery charger got RR to fire up.

Same problem this morning, not starting so tried a jump off diesel Freelander, just ended up flattening battery further, but 30 minutes on the battery charger and RR fired up.

my jump leads are not the Halfrauds rubbish, they were made from 250amp welding cable and I have jump started 4.6L petrol lumps with them.

Any thoughts on why my RR refuses to be jump started? but will start after a blast from the battery charger?

Yep, donor car was running and held at 2000rpm for 10 minutes 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Where do you connect the jump leads to on the RR and where do you connect the battery charger leads to?

Jump leads went on to the jump start posts, and were checked with a multi meter for resistance to battery (in case there was a bad connection).

Battery charger leads were +ve to the jump start post and -ve to the battery 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

I'd be inclined initially to unscrew the -ve Jump post and clean up the thread and cable end clamp to bright shiny metal and refit.
Although the resistance measured with a multimeter indicates low to nil resistance this doesn't indicate the resistance when a large starting current is flowing through it.
I'd also be inclined to do the same with the +ve jump post.
Presumably there is a bolted connection where the battery _ve cable is bolted to the bodywork adjacent to the battery.
Again undo the battery _ve cable and clean everything up to bright shiny metal and re-assemble.
Then see what happens. Thumbs Up

Good point resistance can rise with current

Will give the connections a good clean, probably start with the -ve jump start one first at the +ve looks pretty clean.

I "always" (snigger) use the nut on the suspension turret for the -ve connection, but agree this would be no good if the -ve terminal on the battery itself is not connecting properly. .

I have short cables with Anderson connectors fitted to all our cars & the same with the jump leads - it means I'm guaranteed a good connection on my end

I recall that when my 2004 4.4 had a flat battery there was a problem with jump starting (Discovery recovery vehicle). We called LRA and got advice. I think the battery needed to be shorted out to clear the system. The car seemed to have immobilised itself, perhaps as an anti-theft measure in response to the apparent 'removal' of the battery. Perhaps someone with better technical knowledge than me can confirm? Only Range Rovers since 1988

i hope it was the DISCONECTED BATTERY LEADS that needed shorting out and NOT the battery its self

I was inside the car standing by to try to start it - the recovery operator had that part of the conversation with LRA and did what they said to reset the system - hence my suggestion that someone who knows what needed to be done might clarify. Only Range Rovers since 1988
