TDV8 Turbo failure

Had a look at this last week, and initial diagnosis was a suspected issue with the NS turbo. Made an odd squeaking noise, restricted performance etc. Upon removing the downpipe, and turning the turbo vanes by hand, a tight spot could be felt while turning them

The car was recovered to me at the weekend, and car stripped today. 81k miles...

I did remember this job being a right PITA, but it had been a while since I done my last turbos on an FFRR. I wasn't disappointed Laughing

Most importantly, the engine still sounded sweet and idled away beautifully. A new turbo going on tomorrow afternoon, can't wait Laughing

Good effort on the DIY. Have to admit though that turbo issues is what put me off a tdv8 .... Your post doesn't do much to change that view ! V8 or else ...

Robgosty, how often was oil changed in yours and how did you drive it?
Did you give the turbo time to cool?
I'm not asking to be a smart arse I'm curious as I own one and want to know if people that have had them fail believe they were treating the car well.

Oil changed every 5k, driven briskly but not ragging it around, 107k with full history was not expecting turbos to pop off, just unlucky I guess Crying or Very sad when I arrive home have a low speed corner then a slow reverse on to drive, revs were always low when engine switched off and usually ticking over 10 to 20 secs before turning off

Just curious.

Only had it a year so EGRs not cleaned, AFAIK not required on TDV8, however will be going back together with 2 X new turbos, 2 x new EGR valves and a new intercooler so giving it every chance Thumbs Up

Interesting thread.

Why the new intercooler? Are you going bigger?

Also what caused the tight spot on the turbo, any feedback from the turbo refurb place? ______________________________

New intercooler as bits of swarf from turbo came out of it, not taking any chances with a 3k parts Bill Sad

Fair enough.

It sounds like the turbo shaft had quite a bit of movement then. ______________________________

JOE90 - if your out there !

I have just got back and this thread caught my eye - good one Mikey

I have some questions:

Are u talking about a 3.6 TDV8 or 4,4 TDV8

Now - may be a Question Joe90 knows straight off - ( Good man J90 )

Which is more reliable:

3.6 TDV8 TURBO

vs

4.4 TDV8

do they use common turbos ?

is it good practice to change both turbos at ************* mileage ????

What do you think the average Turbo will last for ??

having said that a local farm garage workshop chap ( Aged around 70 - has 265,000 miles on his Mitsubishi truck - looking at the rust I am thinking yeh !!!! - but hes adamant its true mileage and original turbo says he changes oil every 5K ????

It would be a good idea if some threads STATE TDV8 4.4 or TDV8 3.6 - so we all know what power unit it concerns.

But Thank You Mikey for posting - interesting Thumbs Up

Car is question is a 2010, 3.6 TDV8, with 80k miles approx

Around this mileage is when most 3.6 turbos seem to give issues. I do wonder if it is worth pro-actively replacing the turbo oil feed pipe at 50-60k, before any issues occur...

FWIW, my D3 is on its original turbo at 182k. Oil changed with high quality fully synthetic oil every 10k. I'm aiming for 250k Thumbs Up

keep us all posted - would be a good entry

one last thing - do you know what a Turbo mileage could achieve ?? - based on as you say frequent high grade oil & no Jeremy Clarkson stamping pedal from cold.
