Any bad points on the 5.0 FF

Been perusing the Ads again and having a look at the 2010 Model 5.0 Litre FF's , have read about the common faults on the 3.6 TDV8's ( although i had one myself and never had any bother with it ) so was wondering if there is anything untoward to look out for on the 5.0 litre version or are they much in common with the 4.2 SC ( Also a previous car ) ...

Or would you go for a 2012 4.4 TDV8 for the same price as a 2010 5.0 ( same mileage )

I don't do a lot of miles so petrol / diesel consumption wouldn't be a problem ... Thumbs Up

Only downside all the better ones are in Englandshire , only 2 up here ... so might have to travel ... Laughing Laughing Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover SVAutobiography 5.0 SC V8 Orkney Grey

Hi,

I have had 10 petrol Range Rovers, of which 4 have been 5.0, and latest is a lwb 5.0 and i have a 550bhp SV on order, all other previous were either 4.2 supercharged and 1 early 4.4 when they were new.

All have been trouble free and perfect in every sense. Almost bullet proof. Only thing i had to have done on my last one was a supercharger was replaced under warranty at around 60k. Other than that my last one was faultless and brilliant to drive, keep them serviced and run on Super unleaded and all should be well.

And if your going for a Range Rover do it properly. Good thing is they only do the Supercharged in UK spec in Autobiography, so pretty much fully loaded.

Good luck with your hunt for the perfect one.

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Santorini Black

Not much help but...

I had exactly the same buying dilemma. In the end, I opted for the 2012 TDV8 4.4 AB, not because of mpg in itself but the frequency of fill-ups on the 5.0 SC would become tiresome. That's just me though, having been there (first name terms with the garage tellers) and found that I prefer range.

From the anecdotal evidence Mick, doing little and often small mileage drives doesn't suit the diesel as much as the petrol.

I know where my money would go Whistle Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Had mine nearly a couple of years Mick. 2010 MY 5.0 S/C. Like you, I only generally do short journeys so a diesel was not the right choice. Problems have been few and far between (kiss of death statement!). Adaptive Dynamics fault, well documented on here and a simple fix, TPMS errors when there isn't a problem (switch off with the IID tool). I did have the water pump fail last year in spectacular style with every conceivable warning light coming up, but I think that was hopefully a one off and not a common fault with this variant.

Whilst not cheap to run, although fuel prices are not bad at the moment, the fun factor of having 510bhp at your disposal will keep you smiling Very Happy

Go for it mate and good luck with your search!

Cheers,

i had the the L322 4.2 SC and the 5.0 SC - i had only some minor problems (been all solved under warranty) - and if you drive only a few miles per year like i did (6000) the 5.0 SC will be the perfect car for you Smile

PS: and if you are willing to buy the L405 - then go for it - it is so much of a difference ! Twisted Evil All my spelling errorz are belong to me!

I'd like to respond in two parts. First the RR 5.0SC is fantastic. The engine feels perfectly mated to th zf6hp28 and the rest of the truck. It is a perfect amount of power for the truck distributed perfectly. There is so much torque in every gear you don't feel like you are driving a six speed, the tranny almost never needs to downshift for more power. 80mph up a hill, no problem. When you do need to downshift the truck is fantastic too. Driving over the Rocky Mountains on i70 you hit 10,000 feet and left lane speed is 65 MPH during the climb, my old Prius literally cannot go to the speed limit up such an incline, the rover can accelerate to nearly 100mph and it almost never needs a lot of gas/rpms unless you are accelerating to 100. The 5.0sc hp kicks in around 3.7 grand and it takes off, getting on to a highway at 80 or 90 mph just from the onramp is possible. Speeding around a trucker who seems intent to kill you, it is easy to get it past 110mph, a matter of seconds from normal highway speeds. This engine wants to be driven fast. It is a pleasure either cruising or going in the mountains where passing is a breeze, instead of a crap shoot.

The truck is really fast in a straight line on the road. I would guess the Rover's 4wd lays down the power very well, rolling to 60mph occurs in about 5.1s. People have posted their trucks go in 4.8s to 60 on RR.net. I spoke about it with references to the road test in another thread, "which is faster?" but nearly everyone has tested the 5.0 SC almost a second faster to sixty than rated by land rover.

Off road the 5.0SC is unreal again. There is so much torque so low, you really don't need to touch the gas often, where in the 4.4 gas na I had to hit the gas a bit to climb over small rocks etc, the 5.0 will idle over them.

Range is about 350 miles mixed my mpgs are 20 hwy and 15-16 around town in us gallons.

Downsides:

Oil Changes: Not many issues but I have heard you have to change the oil much more often than specified, and I can concur the truck feels best with 5k mile oil changes. People have run out of oil and siezed the 5.0 block or made their cylinders out of bore. This is perhaps made worse by the electronic dip stick which requires almost a completely level parking surface to record an accurate reading.

The water pump was upgraded at some point, basically it can stop or explode resulting in rapid cooling loss which if you drive on further almost always will sieze the 5.0 block. So if your engine shows any signs of overheating just tow it, even if you are only driving a few miles further.

The supercharger oil and belt are on the rear of the supercharger, which is sort of a pain if you want to change the SC oil.

Timing belt, I have heard that the timing chains can loosen and will require about 12 hours to make right. I have not had this issue but I have heard it reported. Although the issues presents more as "slop" than "stop".

When it is over 6,000 pounds wet, and has 510 hp, and is taxed as a truck, what do you intend to call it?

Mick, the 5.0 is a far nicer drive. The only place it trails the log burner is low down torque for towing. That's it, in every other way the 5.0 is nicer. Thumbs Up

2017 I've heard 50 HP boost across the range of 5.0SC tunes, so 600hp or so in the SVA and 550hp or so in the standard SC. They will get faster still.
