MY10 TDV8 Restricted Performance and Gearbox Fault

Hi all,

I've had my MY10 TDv8 Vogue SE for a few months now and apart from a couple of minor issues like the deployable step breaking and a fuel gauge wiring fault it's been pretty good....

However this weekend it ended up on the back of an AA truck. About 20 minutes into a journey it came up with Gearbox Fault, Forward Alert Inactive and Restricted Performance error messages. The car won't do more than 15mph and feels like it is being held in 1st gear possibly.

After leaving the car turned off for 30 mins it drove fine again for 5minutes or so then the fault came back. A turn off and on again cleared it and it drove ok for another 5mins but after that turning it off and on doesn't make any difference, the faults remain.

The AA plugged it in and got the following codes

P0088 Fuel Pressure System Pressure malfunction
U2023 Engine torque signal invalid

For now I've just had the battery on charge for 24hours to make sure it is ok, the AA said the battery and alternator seemed fine when he tested them but it can't do any harm I guess. I just turned it on and the faults still remain

I've been searching around online and not really seen any common issues on the forums, one suggestion with the fuel pressure was to change fuel filter, now the car has just popped up to say it needs a service in the last week or so. I'm not sure if it has ever had a fuel filter so again no harm to try it I suppose.

If anybody has experienced anything similar I'd welcome any thoughts at all. I'm going to try to book in with the local specialist but they tend to be booked up for 3 weeks at least so I'm up for trying DIY fixes in the mean time.

This is very strange now, I managed to limp it to the specialist with all faults present (at a max speed of around 15mph). Left it overnight and when they looked at the car the next day there were no faults stores and none being displayed by the car, they drove it and it didn't fault. I drove it for around 30mins today and it still didn't fault so I've brought it home for now, but I don't trust it at all Shocked

i havnt got a 3.6 myself but isnt there a common problem of split pipes on top of the engine that produce this kind of symptom...

It could be down to a dodgy battery - 5 years is a reasonable life expectancy & once the level drops, they can throw up all sorts of weird faults.

Did the AA clear the faults ? sounds odd that the fault codes were not stored - how 'specialist' is the person you are using to look into it ?

Oh yes thanks, profile updated.

When I bought the car, the seller did say that he had replaced some wires on top of the suspension struts that can cause issues, I'll read into that on the forum to see if it could be related. But they have been done I'm told.

The AA had tried to clear the fault but it came back on the dash straight after they cleared it and I drove it. At that point we recovered the car back to my house. I would've thought the fact the faults were still on the dash after the AA tried to clear them then they would still be stored, but apparently they've gone.

Regarding the battery, that was my first thought when this happened and I charged it for 48hours on the car, yet after I had finished the faults were still on the dash and I had to drive it to the specialist with restricted performance at 15mph. I believe the battery was changed at some point in the last 5 years for a gel battery, I do a lot of short journeys in the car though so could've run it down despite the AA saying the readings were all ok on it.

I'll keep driving it for now and see if the fault comes back, if so back to the specialist. They are a well respected specialist called Land Ranger Services, I've always found them to be good in the past

The faults displayed on the dash could clear themselves if the fault goes away

However, I thought all historic faults were stored on the car unless explicitly cleared - so would have expected them to be able to at least see those.

I guess all you can do for the moment is keep the battery charged & see if they re-occur

Yes I thought that too, can't quite figure it out as I haven't had the battery off and the faults have been present since they were cleared by the AA.

I'll keep driving it for now and see what happens.

Stan - just realised in your post you may have been talking about the top intercooler hoses that split, I did actually change mine when I first got the car as it always starting to split so that's done too. I've git a feeling this is some kind of electrical gremlin

I'll report back once I know more

So 3 weeks in and the fault hasn't recurred... however today I got a new fault. 'Adaptive dynamics error'. I had the code read and it turns out the wiring to my front left damper had a split, I repaired the wire and this fault has gone away.

I don't know if this is likely to be related to the other errors I was getting originally or not. I'm still nervous about any long distance journeys in case the gearbox fault re-emerges and I end up only being able to do a max 15mph on the motorway Confused
