Hi there, just popping over from the RRSport site. Had mine for nearly 3 years now. Love the car and do a bit of offroading in it. In fact I've since managed to get some Bowler 18" wheels with Cooper AT tyres which make it remarkably capable.

If it is the L405 you are looking at them it looks like that with the seats folded.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ah thanks - that's a lot better than I thought! I saw a photo which suggested there was a big lip between the boot and the seat, but that photo looks fine.

Another question....what sort of range can you get with the 4.4 diesel and 5.0 petrol? I've worked out that with the mileage I do the actual petrol cost isn't that much greater in grand scheme of things, but ideally I'd like at least a 350 mile range.

Don't know on the range for the 405 as I have a 4.4 L322 but I'm sure someone will be along with an answer soon

I tend to just fill mine up when its empty, it will get a pretty decent distance into france from Derbyshire without a fill up, or easily to Dijon on about 2/3 of a tank from the chunnel, thats all I need to know. In theory it shows the best part of 500 miles with a fill up, but in practice on day to day driving that is not attainable, but on a long steady run mine gets about 30 to the gallon, and the tank is about 19 gallons so it is possible to get close, there are innumerable threads on fuel etc.

There don't seem to be any smaller wheel choices on the 405, 20" seem to be about the smallest I have seen. Even the L322
only has 19" on the latter models as the larger wheels were needed to fit over the 6 pot calipers. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I've got a 4.4 SDV8 - and a fairly heavy right foot - but I still get 550 miles to a tank - something like mid 90 litres at a fill

There's not much of a lip in the boot, but its far from boat - the seat bases stay put, which really restricts how far the backs can fold. On a Vogue SE or Autobiography, the seats fold electrically though - there's a switch on the inside of the boot

If your focus is on practicality then you might consider a late 322 with one of the engines you specify. It has a much larger boot due to the higher roof and the seats tumble as well as fold. The 19" wheel option takes 255/55R19 tyres and there are a number of all terrains available, the Goodyear Duratrac being the LR homologated choice. They have a relatively soft compound so work quite well in snow and on ice as well as on mud/soft ground but will not be as sturdy as an MT/R. If you are on sharp rocks a lot they will cut more and the sidewalls are not as strong. You will have a bit more weight with the 322 than what you have with the RRS, but I think it lifts higher for better obstacle clearance/articulation. I think LR pitched the 322 as more off road capable than the RRS, but as you say tyres are crucial.

Have a look at the posts by Haylands (admittedly an earlier car with 18" wheels, a lighter engine and various protective modifications), discount the offroad capacity a bit and see if it would do you.

If you need tank range the 4.4 TDV8 is the one to choose. On longer journeys at steady speeds 30 mpg should be achievable (I use Shell V Power diesel and get this as the average on the car readout, have not checked independently). Only Range Rovers since 1988

I get over 550 miles out of my L405 SDV8. The range at fill up is always around 600 miles (but you fill up short of that.

Agree that you'd get a far bigger boot in the L322. The only advantage the L405 has is that there are no wheel arch intrusions so the load space is in some respects wider (it is the same depth) but lacks height and the cant of the rear screen is steeper.

The L405 is wider than an L322 so offroading is a bit tighter too.

Outright capacity isn't an issue - it's more the flat loading that makes the space more useable. The next car will be for 3-5 years so I think I'd go for the 405.

Would love to hear from some petrol drivers about range. If it's the same 19 gallon tank and you average 15mpg(?) then that's only about 285 miles? Or on a long motorway run can you eek a bit more out?

I think I need to test drive one to see if it makes sense to change. Just worried that whilst it's a better car, it may not be quite as versatile as the sport as a 'one car does it all'.
