United Kingdom 2004 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

I was just wondering what could be done to tune the standard 4.4 engine rather than fit the 'quick fix' turbo.Such improvements with cylinder head, valves, porting ,exhaust, lightended pistons, improved conrods and balanced crank depending on your budget could surely give big gains in horsepower which is naturally aspired.Bearing in mind most 1 litre sports motorcycles give out 170hp+ as standard which equates to 780hp from the 4.4.I know this figure is totally unrealistic but someone out there should be able to find 500hp naturally aspired .

i think overfinch bored them out to 5ltrs and raised the compression ratios.

I suppose it depends how highly stressed you go. It's fairly easy to make an engine more powerful, but making it reliable and smooth are the difficult bit. And in the Range Rover there is the question of how long the drive train would last.

BMW did a 4.6 version of the same engine according to wikipedia.

Which ever way you increase your engines output, it will involve dumping more fuel in to the engine so your MPG will suffer. Having spent a few minutes looking for a turbo conversion for the BMW M62 and only coming across one setup in a 3 series track car, I think that the popular option is a Supercharger, there is a kit that uses an Eaton supercharger and it all sits under the engine cover.

While there is obviously a Turbo version out there, I think that it may well be limited to the Bentley, which will put you in to Bentley prices, and they make a Range Rover look really cheap Shocked Example 1 x 19" alloy wheel for a Bentley turbo retailed at £1500.00, 15 years ago Shocked You could almost get a full set from Land Rover for that.

So if you have a desire for way more power, then I'd suggest that you look for a supercharger kit. I did see secondhand ones for £1500 Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

If what i see on Wikipedia is correct, they only built 59 Arnage Green Labels (BMW 4.4), so finding a second hand lump for one is going to be near on impossible. There are probably only a handful in the UK.

All Arnages were BMW-engined "green labels" until the old 6.75 ("Red Label") became an option in 2000, after that the 4.4 was officially known as a Green Label. Those 59 cars are the only ones sold with the BMW engine after this.

Ok, that makes sense. How many cars did they build from 1998-2000? It can't have been many? Probably not much more than a few hundred world wide?

Id rather an S62 conversion from a BMW e39 M5, would be a serious L322 to behold. also the conversion cost wouldn't be huge as those cars are still falling in price.

failing that the 4.6is M62 that went in the X5 is a nice power boost.

Thanks for the advice and clarifications chaps, looks like it wouldnt quite be as simple as I'd hoped!

The bigger 4.6 or 4.8 blocks had been at the back of my mind, but I wouldn't want or need to go down this path unless I somehow killed my current engine and required a rebuild. The S62 from the M5 is a good idea and one I've mooted to people before, however this engine apparently bears almost no resemblance to the M62 to the point where nothing would fit - the block itself is different which would cause issues with the front diff mounting, the heads have double VANOS instead of just intake valves, and there are 8 individual throttle bodies with equal length intake trumpets that means an enormous airbox with totally different plumbing Sad

was it RR engined or was it Rover engined. (Rover took over manufacture and development of the Meteor engine, in exchange for the gas turbine business.)

i bet you thought the 5ltr SC was the most juicy of the Rover lumps. Laughing
