Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey

Just on "what's the point" when I am stopped with traffic behind on a surface that is not completely level, I prefer to put the car into neutral and apply the handbrake, to avoid dazzling the driver behind with the brake lights. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Not at all, i'm just concerned that you appeared to take offence to my perfectly civil comment.

Shocked What is wrong with everyone Shocked Christmas Blues, Over tired? Shocked

Careful or Stan will be reaching for the Again Shocked

I can't see why everyone's in such a tizzy about a handbrake....... totally unnecessary on an automatic car with dual brake lines, I'm going to side with those who know the law is old fashioned.

Yes it's a legal requirement, it would have been one of the first requirements of the road traffic act 18-- or when ever they thought of it. It was for manual cars, they hadn't invented automatic then. It stoped the car rolling backwards when doing a hill start... so does having an automatic gearbox Shocked
It also stopped the car when the single line brakes failed.. we have dual line so half the brakes will work, but not forever, when the Bong Tolls stop the bloody car you while you can Thumbs Up
And lastly they provide a means of stopping the car for going walkies when it was parked up..... that is what park is for Rolling Eyes

So if you lot put the car in park and apply your handbrake when parking, do you also chock the wheels just in case the handbrake fails and the transfer box fails along with the gearbox ? Necessary on a Manual car, yes, automatic... not so sure about that one, mine is pristine... only gets used once a year Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Not sure about the fastrack but many tractors and probably the fastrack have 'powered steering' and not PAS.There is no mechanical linkage but purely hydraulic, the steering wheel operates directly to a hydraulic block, can be fun on a very cold morning when it does not work well until the oil has warmed up ,usually has a warning sign !!

After that long post you must be in as bigger 'tizzy' as the rest of us. Laughing

It's not really an issue if the law is out of date or not, all the while the law is there manufacturers have to keep fitting handbrakes (and you're supposed to apply it, just like you're not supposed to do 80mph on the motorway) - the day the law is repealed will be the day manufacturers stop fitting handbrakes (to save money more than anything). I put mine on out of habit, i've either had manual cars or automatic lorries (where you really do have to put the handbrake on - they don't have P)

But you're right, i don't see what all the fuss is about. The question was asked what the point of having a hand brake is, and i calmly and non-judgementally gave the point of them being there - ie. it has to be there and be used by law. There are also other times when they might be useful, as Stan pointed out, it makes it easier to get it into gear on steep hills. Brake failure is pretty rare these days, but as i said in my original post yanking the handbrake on is better than nothing obviously the faster you're going the less effective it is. I suppose on most Auto's these days too there's not mechanical linkage for the gear selector, so an electrically failure could 'possibly' result in not being able to put it in park or it unlocking it's self (unlikely, but possible)

Yeah Fork lifts are the same i think. You do have a certain amount of steering with the power off, but it's not good! You're basically manually pumping fluid into the steering rams.
